During his career, Adams worked with director Denis Villeneuve only once. Villeneuve was also nominated for an Oscar, having received Oscar recognition for his directing, writing and producing work. Like Adams, Villeneuve could receive awards this year for his work on a 2024 film. For him, this will be the sci-fi sequel Dune: Part Twowhich performed well among critics and audiences upon its release in March. Adams and Villeneuve's only joint project also received Oscar recognition, and Adams reveals something about his experience with the film years later.

Adams explains why he waited so long to show his daughter Arrivalhis Villeneuve film. This 2016 alien invasion sci-fi film is based on Ted Chiang's short story “Story of Your Life.” In addition to Adams, it features a main cast that includes Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg and Mark O'Brien. It was nominated for several Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Production Design, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Direction for Villeneuve. Adams' omission from the Best Actress category that year was controversial, as many viewers loved her performance in Arrival.
Talking to Vanity FairAdams reveals why he didn't let his daughter watch Arrival until. Addressing director Villeneuve, Adams said that Villeneuve gave her “one of the greatest gifts a director has ever given“She Saying Adams”to have[ed]” the character Louise. She revealed that her daughter, Aviana, “I finally watched the movie six months ago.” Initially she didn't show the film to Aviana because she didn't “like her watching [her] be a mother to other people.” Check out Adams' full explanation below:
I worked really hard and came in with all this energy, and I still remember the first day we were reviewing the script and I was hammering you with questions and thoughts. The next day you gave me one of the greatest gifts a director has ever given me, when you said: “You own her. I'm giving it to you. I know you know her and she is yours now.” I don't know why I never thought I could have that kind of faith in myself, but when you had that faith in me, I felt free. It was transformative for me. [Adams’ daughter] Aviana finally watched the film six months ago. I let her watch the movie and she loved it.
I didn't want her to see Arrival, because I don't like her seeing me be other people's mothers. I don't want her to think that my motherhood is in any way performative, so I've always been careful.

This isn't what one would necessarily expect when thinking about why Adams might not have let his daughter watch it. Arrival. While Aviana is not known to have any type of terminal illness in real life, this would also be an element that could contribute to why Arrival it would be upsetting for Adams' daughter to watch.
