Mythical Island provides some interesting updates to one of the dominant decks in Pokémon TCG Pocket. Several powerful decks are emerging in Pokémon TCG Pocket with the arrival of Mythical Islandthe brand new mini-expansion. With only around 60 new cards (not counting alternate art cards), Mythical Island contains just some powerful new card combos that can be used as the basis for a new deck. However, the set contains several cards that can improve existing dominant decks.
For example, Mythical Island has several cards that increase Mewtwo's already powerful ex deck. You canreplace Mewtwo ex with the powerful but clash-dependent Mew ex or augment your existing Mewtwo deck with the Mythical Slab card. Both implements can help improve an existing Psychic-type deck, but they don't completely replace the full deck archetypes used to make Mewtwo ex/Gardevoir one of the strongest decks in the game.
Best Cards for a Mythic Island Psychic-Type Deck
Mew Ex can be used in an existing Mewtwo Ex deck to make it more powerful
If you want to create an entirely new deck, you should start with Mew ex. This card is one of the strongest on Mythical Island thanks to its Genome Hacking attack, which is capable of replicating an attack from the opponent's Active Pokémon. This is a great attack that can replicate powerful attacks like former Charizard's Crimson Storm or former Mewtwo's Psydrive. Genome Hacking ignores energy and also drops the requirements of these attacks, so you can destroy opponents without worrying about energy replenishment.
While Mew's ex is great, he has a glaring weakness against Pikachu's ex. Pikachu ex's Circle Circuit attack only deals damage to all Electric-type Pokémon on the Bench, meaning Mew ex cannot replicate its attack strength. However, you can use the new Mythic Island card Beheeyem to help combat decks that rely on Benched Pokémon. Beheeyem normally deals 10 damage with his Mind Jack attack, but tAttack power increases by 20 for each Benched Pokémon your opponent has. While Beheeyem can't defeat former Pikachu in one hit, it would at least weaken the Pokémon for a follow-up attack.
Instead of just focusing on Mew's ex, it would be better to put Mew's ex in the Mewtwo ex deck. Mewtwo's ex's Psydrive knocks out most Pokémon in one hit, and Mew ex can come into play when the opponent places a strong attacker on the active spot. This deck variation would also benefit from the new Leaf Trainer card, which reduces a Pokémon's Retreat cost by two. This would allow you to trade Mewtwo ex for free to get Mew ex into play. You can also add Mythical Slab to get Psychic-type Pokémon out of a deck faster.
How to win using a Mythic Island Psychic-type deck
Use mythical island cards to quickly set up powerful attackers
Assuming you want to use Mew ex and Mewtwo ex together, an ideal deck list would be as follows:
-
My ex
-
Mewtwo ex x2
-
Ralts x2
-
Kirlia x2
-
Gardevoir x2
-
Mythical Slab x2
-
Poké Ball x2
-
Sabrina
-
Teacher Research x2
-
Sheet
-
Beginner expeditionary
-
Potion x2
You should try to get Mewtwo ex into the Active Spot as quickly as possible to act as a wall against early attacks. Mythical Slab helps draw Gardevoir and its pre-evolved forms early in the game to help increase Gardevoir's power acceleration as quickly as possible. You should focus on dividing the energy between Mewtwo ex and Mew exwith Gardevoir boosting the Active Pokémon with Energy as needed. Mew ex serves as a solid secondary option, with Budding Expeditioner and Leaf serving as ways to trade Mew ex for free.
You can also use Sabrina to force an unfavorable confrontation for Mew's ex. Ideally, You can use Sabrina to kick out a stall Pokémon and place the opponent's primary attacker while he does not have enough energy to attack. This strategy should work well against almost all dominant Pokémon decks, while also helping to mitigate the bad draws that sometimes hamper the existing former Mew deck.
Ultimately, a strong Psychic-type deck doesn't reinvent the wheel with Mythic Island cards, but rather uses them to augment an already powerful deck. Mewtwo ex is one of the strongest decks in the game, and Mew ex, Leaf and Mythical Slab make the deck even stronger. Keep in mind that Mew ex doesn't need any psychic energy to use its Genome Hacking attack, so wait Pokémon TCG Pocket Players can use it in other strong decks (like Charizard ex) as it is a powerful counter in many circumstances.
