I think Wonder Woman's daughter just revealed her first superpower and it's a work of genius

WARNING: Contains potential spoilers for Wonder Woman #16!

In a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment at last Wonder Woman release, I'm 98% sure that DC just revealed the first superpower of Diana Prince and Steve Trevor's daughter. The revelation and acquisition of these powers is simply brilliant, masterfully incorporating a classic element of Wonder Woman lore.

For those just catching up on the madness on Themyscira, Wonder Woman has undergone one of her most significant character evolutions in decades. In issue #14 of the series by Tom King and Daniele Sampere, Diana loses the love of her life – Steve Trevor – and becomes the mother of her daughter made of clay, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Prince Marston.

Given the clay origin shared by Lizzie and Diana, it is reasonable to assume that she will inherit a similar set of powers, although this has not been confirmed. However, issue #16 just revealed what I believe to be Lizzie's first superpower, and it's a twist I never saw coming. If my understanding is correct, Wonder Woman has just imbued her daughter with the powers of the Lasso of Truth.

The origin story of Lizzie's power echoes the legendary Achilles

Wonder Woman #16 resumes the tone of the previous issue, with Diana focusing all her attention on her daughter, Lizzie, while entrusting her allies to deal with the villain Sovereign. In this edition, Diana travels with Lizzie and her Lasso of Truth to one of Themyscira's templeswhere a hooded woman and what appears to be a basin of water await them. Through art alone, the hooded woman is shown dipping the tip of the Lasso of Truth into the basin, causing the liquid to glow a golden color, matching the hue of the lasso.

The woman then removes the bow from the now golden water, dips her finger into the liquid, and gently wets Lizzie's forehead with it. This ritual is reminiscent of a baptism and even echoes the myth of Achilles, whose mother dipped him in the River Styx to grant him invincibility – except at the heel, where the water did not touch. But instead of the River Styx, Lizzie is blessed by water infused with the power of the Lasso of Truth. That's why, It is not difficult to infer that, through this blessing, Lizzie inherited her mother's Lasso of Truth powers.

What specific powers would Wonder Woman's daughter gain from the Lasso of Truth?

If my inference is correct and Lizzie now possesses the powers of the Lasso of Truth through the blessing she received, it would mean that she has gained several powerful abilities. Firstly, she would have the innate ability to force people to tell the truth. While this is an iconic power for Wonder Woman, Diana can only achieve this with the Lasso of Truth. The implication here is that Lizzie could get the truth out of others even without the Lasso in her possession. But this isn't the only mastered skill that Lizzie would now have.

If Lizzie was granted the full range of the Lasso of Truth's abilities, she would have resistance to mind control and also immunity to illusions and other deceptions. Furthermore, she would likely be indestructible and invulnerable. Additionally, Lizzie could also have the power to restore lost or hidden memories and provide emotional healing. She can even gain the ability to temporarily compel others to follow her commands, as well as generate light or energy for attacks. With the blessing of the Lasso of Truth, Lizzie's potential powers expanded into an excitingly masterful realm of possibilities.

Tom King may have sneakily confirmed that Trinity has the power to force the truth out of others

Has Trinity been forcing the truth from the Sovereign this whole time?

While it may seem like fans will have a long wait to find out if Lizzie was truly blessed with the powers of the Lasso of Truth, Tom King may have already subtly confirmed one of these abilities: Lizzie's power to force the truth from others. To understand this, it's important to remember that the Sovereign's narration throughout the series takes place in the future, and he is telling the story to a seemingly older, imprisoned Lizzie, who now goes by the name 'Trinity'. In issue #16, the present-day narrative shows the Sovereign lying to characters like Detective Chimp, Superman and the world as a whole.

However, in his narration of these “past events”, the Sovereign admits that although he has lied to others, he feels compelled to share the truth with Trinity. He explains that the reason he tells her this story, which features his own humiliations, is because she is Trinity, the holder of the three Bonds of Destiny, and as such, she commands respect and is owed her. “truthfulness.” Given the Sovereign's established reputation as a liar and hatred of women, it seems strange that he would openly share the truth with Trinity, despite the reasons he provides. Therefore, this suggests that King may be subtly confirming Trinity's inherent ability to force the truth from others.

The origin story of Trinity's power is the epitome of a mother's love (and echoes Diana's own origin)

While it would undoubtedly be a total badass if it were confirmed that Trinity possesses the powers of the Lasso of Truth, what resonates with me even more are the emotional implications if this turns out to be true. Diana could have easily blessed her daughter with various powers, but she specifically chose the Lasso of Truth. This decision would ensure that Lizzie's mind would always be her own.that she will never be deceived by others or broken by the world – an action of motherly love that I find profoundly beautiful.

This sentiment of Wonder Woman empowering her daughter in this way echoes a powerful moment in the story of Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer. Wonder Woman: Dead Land. In this retelling of Diana's origin, Queen Hippolyta does everything she can to ensure her daughter is “Strong. So strong that she could never get hurt.” Hippolyta creates Diana from clay, infused with a drop of the blood of all the gods, for the sole purpose of making her immune to harm. It is deeply moving, then, to see Wonder Woman Reflect this same maternal determination by striving to make your daughter as strong as possible to protect her from those who might try to harm her.
