The hilarious musical comedy series Girls5eva was picked up for its third season after initially being canceled, but Netflix canceled the series once again. Debuting in 2021 as a Peacock original, Girls5eva concerns the members of a wonderful 1990s pop group who decide to reunite after one of their songs goes viral. Over the course of three seasons, each band member tries to balance their adult lives with their far-fetched dreams of pop stardom in their 40s. Skillfully combining music, heart and humor, Girls5eva it was a genuine success.

This cult status earned the show a dedicated audience, but its streaming original didn't believe in the series after the second season. In a shocking move, Peacock canceled the well-rated series after two seasons, leaving its future in jeopardy. However, Netflix wasted no time in rescuing the abandoned show and quickly renewed it for a third season, which debuted on the platform alongside the first two seasons. A failed second chance

Netflix's decision to acquire the beleaguered series kept hopes alive that Girls5eva could finally get the attention it deserved. Unfortunately, the streamer's plan didn't work out and Netflix canceled it Girls5eva after the third season. Rescuing a canceled show has rarely been worth it, and Girls5eva joins a growing list of resurrected shows that weren't released after just one season in your new home. Although it seemed like it could be a slam dunk, the musical comedy got lost in a slew of other content. Before Netflix officially announced it, star Busy Phillips took to his podcast to break the news, saying:

It's dead. Yeah. I'm just saying that because, fuck. If Netflix doesn't want it, I will. I don't think many people watched it or watched it in the way that counts or I don't know. In fact, I just don't know.

As Phillips mentioned in his direct statement, the reason Girls5eva was canned likely due to low viewership numbers. The show's overwhelmingly positive critical reception was misleading, and while people who watched it loved it, not many people watched the series. As such, it's highly unlikely that another streamer will pick up Girls5evaand the experiment on behalf of Netflix was a noble misstep.

Shows how Girls5eva Live and die in its cast, and if Netflix had renewed the series for Season 4, the entire main cast would likely have returned. Since the leads remained on the show during its difficult final years, it stands to reason that they would have returned for Season 4, especially after the cliffhanger ending. This means fans could expect to see Sara Bareilles return as Dawn alongside Busy Philipps as Summer, Paula Pell as Gloria and Renée Elise Goldsberry as Wickie.

What happens next for the girls in the band?

Season 3 was a rollercoaster of emotions for the Girls5eva members, but IUltimately, it ended on a cliffhanger that practically demanded a 4th season. After their self-funded tour was repeatedly derailed, Wickie made the bold decision to book the band at Radio City Music Hall and put them on the hook for half a million dollars if they couldn't sell out the venue. Although they eventually found a way to get their money back, it wasn't exactly the triumphant return everyone was hoping for.

Dawn finally had her son and was pulled into domestic life and away from the demanding world of music and the spotlight. But just as things seemed to be slowing down, Wickie's song suddenly went viral, earning him a lucrative offer from Nance Trace. She declined the offer unless the entire group was involved, and Trace eventually agreed. This left Wickie with a difficult choice and put the girls in the band in an emotional bind. Girls5eva Season 4 would have immediately addressed what happens next, especially since it likely would have damaged their relationship.
