Marvel TV Boss Addresses the Question of Whether Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter Are MCU Canon After Years of Debate

After the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline began canonizing past Marvel TV shows such as Reckless, Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter get a clarification from Marvel Studios. Although Disney+ is the main source of Marvel Studios TV shows, fans are still hoping to see the ABC era of Marvel series being recognized more in the MCU continuity. With programs like Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter While it's still unclear where they stand in the overall canon, the ABC dramas may finally be close to being placed in the Earth-616 timeline.

ScreenRant's Joe Deckelmeier recently sat down with Marvel Studios head of TV, streaming and animation Brad Winderbaum to talk And if…? season 3, and the executive briefly mentioned Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter with regards to its MCU canon status. Although he doesn't reveal many details, Winderbaum said he likes to think about trying “square these ABC programs with the canon”, as he stated the following:

Brad Winderbaum: Well, I'll tell you something and put it this way. It's exciting for me to think about how to reconcile these ABC shows with the canon. That, to me, if you know me and the way my brain works, is fun territory to imagine.

ScreenRant: Well, I have a list that breaks down episodically where it would fit in the MCU. So I'll send it to you after that.

Brad Winderbaum: I need it. I need this.

With Winderbaum's latest comments, it looks like Marvel Studios might be trying to figure out where Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter fit into the timeline in ways that would make sense creatively. It's crucial to remember that before Marvel Studios' Disney+ shows, there was a separate division of Marvel TV that wasn't overseen by Kevin Feige. All of Marvel's ABC, Netflix, and Hulu shows had Jeph Loeb as TV overseer, meaning Feige had no hands-on role before Marvel TV was absorbed into his role at Marvel Studios as chief creative officer.

How Winderbaum Didn't Work Agents of SHIELD or Agent Carterthere are many seasons of content for him and his team to sift through when it comes to figuring out where they could all go in the overall MCU. When it comes to Agent Carter cast and the story their show told, it will likely be easier for Marvel Studios to position the ABC drama in the canon since it is set shortly after Captain America: The First Avenger. However, since Agents of SHIELD it lasted until the 7th season and dealt with time travel, which is a bigger challenge, especially in Phase 3, since that was when the series had fewer connections with cinema.

Considering the amount of comments Marvel fans have made about the lack of Agents of SHIELD characters and references from the film franchise, It's great to know that Winderbaum may finally be trying to fit into the show, and even Agent Carterin the MCU timeline. It wouldn't be shocking if one day, similar to what happened with the Marvel-Netflix shows this year, Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter previous seasons are properly inserted into the Disney + timeline. But until then, fans will always be able to relive each season of Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter through Disney+ or on Blu-ray/DVD.
