Amidst the excitement over the recently announced The Witcher 4fans are wondering where and how Geralt of Rivia will appear in the new title. Although the grizzled monster hunter was mentioned in the new The Game Awards trailer, it's clear that players will be put in the shoes of their adopted daughter, Ciri, on this outing. Still, with how beloved the character is, it's likely he'll be present in the new game in at least some capacity.
Almost certainly, in fact, since it has already been revealed thatt Doug Cockle will return to voice the older wizard. It's an exciting development that means Geralt will definitely have speaking roles in the fourth game, but it doesn't answer the question of how exactly Geralt will appear in The Witcher 4.
Doug Cockle is returning as Geralt
The voice fans know and love is back
It was confirmed that Doug Cockle is returning to voice Geralt (through IGN), as he did throughout the original trilogy of Wizard games. At the very least, this means that Geralt will be present in scenes talking to Ciri, although this is still very open-ended. Given that it is not yet confirmed how many years have passed since the Wizard 3 fiction, it's possible that Geralt is long gone and only appears in flashbacks.
On the other hand, witchers are notoriously long-lived, and depending on what ending fans got in the third game with Geralt, he may have decided to return from his monster hunting duties. It's entirely possible that Geralt is still around, either retired with Yennifer or living with Triss in Kovir. He may even be working as a wizard, traveling alone on the road while his daughter does the same.
How Geralt might return to The Witcher 4
Which possibilities seem most likely?
Given the powers that Ciri displays in the trailer, being able to drink wizard potions and cast signsit's likely been several years since the end of the last game, during which she underwent witch training and mutations. This would also put it far enough away that the political ramifications of Wizard 3namely the war with Nilfgaard, would be largely addressed and eliminated in terms of story. That said, it's incredibly unlikely that the game will take place so far in the future that Geralt has already passed away.
While he may appear in the new game in Ciri's flashbacks, given his role as her mentor, CD Projekt Red knows how much the fanbase loves Geralt of Rivia. The chances of him showing up for a mission or two, even if it's just a cameo, are very high. The Witcher 4 It would certainly be better to include at least a few minutes of screen time for this legendary hunter.
