The perfect sequel to The Martian would make a fantastic sci-fi TV show

Andy Weir's third novel, Ave Maria Projecthas the potential to receive as good an adaptation as The Martianpreferably as a science fiction TV show. The Martian is Andy Weir's first published novel and one of Ridley Scott's best films. It revolves around Mark Watney's (Matt Damon) survival on Mars while waiting for a rescue team. Ave Maria Project almost reverses The Martianthe narrative. While The Martian depicts Mark Watney's time on Mars waiting for his crew, Ave Maria ProjectRyland Grace's protagonist travels even further on a mission in which he must die to save the Earth.

Ave Maria Project follows Ryland Grace during two different timelines – flashbacks to Ryland's final memories on Earth and Ryland aboard the Hail Mary in the present day. The contrast between Ave Maria Project and The Martian makes the former the perfect accompaniment. However, Ave Maria Project makes more sense as a TV show. Although Ave Maria Project supposed to be a sci-fi television adaptation, there is already a film adaptation in the works starring Ryan Gosling. Ave Maria Projectthe release date is currently March 20, 2026.

Project Ave Maria is the perfect sequel to The Martian

Andy Weir's books have a lot in common

Ave Maria Project would be the perfect accompaniment to The Martian because they share themes while contrasting with each other. The Martian depicts Mark Watney's survival after an unexpected sandstorm leaves him stranded on Mars. He must survive until his crew of the Hermes returns to rescue him. On the other hand, Ave Maria Project depicts Ryland Grace's survival in outer space, but instead of trying to survive on a planet, Ryland lives on the Hail Mary as he travels to the star Tau Ceti. Mark and Ryland's missions go wrong, but with very different results.

Mark Watney is stranded on Mars, while Ryland Grace unexpectedly survives to save Earth and live on his own terms. Furthermore, their circumstances are different as Mark's memories are fully intact, while Ryland wakes up in the Hail Mary without any memory of his mission, which he only remembers over time – he is in the Hail Mary traveling to a Solar System 12 light years away to save the Sun and, by extension, humanity. However, the central themes of The Martian and Ave Maria Project are similar in that both stories feature an unlikely protagonist who thrives in space against all odds.

Ave Maria Project would make a great TV show

The structure of the Ave Maria project would be ideal for a TV show

Cover of the Ave Maria Project book

Ave Maria Project is particularly unique because it would make more sense as a science fiction TV show. The book is set up to follow two narrative periods: the days before Ryland leaves Earth for the mission and wakes up with no memory of his Hail Mary. This dual timeline is unlikely to provide the full effects of a film because film productions often condense the story. to fit the period of the film. A TV show would allow the narrative to come to fruition Ave Maria Projectcorrectly both timelines, giving both stories the attention they deserve.

Until The Martian is not immune to condensation – some notable differences in books and films in The Martian involve speeding up Mark Watney's time on Mars. Although it does not affect The MartianSpeeding up Ryland Grace's story could harm the narrative. One sci-fi TV show that has benefited from a TV adaptation is Netflix's 3Body Problembased on Remembrance of Earth's past by Liu Cixin. The TV show also follows multiple timelines and the payoff is substantial: renewal of the 3Body Problem confirmed that there will be three seasons to tell the story, one for each book in the trilogy.

A Hail Mary film project is already in development

Ryan Gosling to Star as Ryland Grace in Hail Mary Project

Although it is a TV show for Ave Maria Project it would make more sense, the adaptation of the novel will end up being a film starring Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace. The film is set to be released on March 20, 2026 and is currently in production. Ave Maria ProjectThe co-director announced the start of filming using a behind-the-scenes photo in June 2024. The film will also star Sandra Hüller as Eva Stratt and will feature other actors such as Milana Vayntrub and James Ortiz. Amazon MGM Studios will distribute Ave Maria Project through Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures.

From now on, the adaptation of the Ave Maria Project seems to be in good handsand is well underway for filming. Only time will tell if the film will be a good adaptation. However, optimism is high with Drew Goddard returning as screenwriter (he also wrote The Martianscript), with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller as directors. Ave Maria Project is one of the best science fiction books of recent years and Andy Weir's best work to date. The story deserves the right opportunity to shine on the screen, regardless of the format.
