Original Sin's premiere missed an obvious return of Michael C. Hall's Dexter for the 18-year-old pilot episode

THE Dexter prequel series Dexter: Original Sin missed an excellent opportunity to incorporate a unique “Dexterism” into its pilot episode. Developed by New blood creator Clyde Phillips, the prequel series chronicles a post-college Dexter as he embraces his “dark passenger” through the guidance and teachings of his adoptive father, Harry. Dexter implements Harry's code to satisfy his violent urges while ensuring he will never be caught.

After Michael C. Hall reprized his iconic role as the charismatic serial killer vigilante in 2021 Dexter: New Bloodhe returns as Dexter's inner voice and narrator in the prequel series. The series takes place in Miami in 1991, when Dexter begins his career at Miami Metro PD. Dexter: Original Sin it will likely cover some predicted deaths that are already established in Dexter lore. Another upcoming Dexter series, Dexter: Resurrectionexpected to be released in summer 2025 with Hall also scheduled to return.

Since it's his first introduction to the Miami metro and he's trying to make a good first impression, it seems like a missed opportunity not to have him walk in with his classic variety of donuts. This small but significant detail was an important part of his Miami Metro workplace persona, so its omission from the premiere seems like an obvious oversight.

At the end of Dexter: Original Sin premiere when Dexter is introduced in Miami Metro, there is a slight nod to the donut detail that would otherwise be missing. Miami Metro PD records supervisor Camilla Figg, played by Margo Martindale in the original series, welcomes Harry back from his hospital leave with a donut on top of his coffee cup. This suggests that There Could Be More to the Origin Story of Dexter's Donuts in a later Dexter: Original Sin episode.

There is still a lot of time to Dexter: Original Sin to come up with an origin story for Dexter's signature donut offerings. While it seems like a missed opportunity not to include this detail in the first episode, the series could be leading to thisespecially considering Camilla's notable nod during her introductory scene. Hopefully, like other aspects of Dexter's younger self, there will be an insightful explanation for why Dexter started bringing out his classic donuts in future episodes of Dexter: Original Sin.
