Warning: contains possible spoilers for recent editions of Thundercats, like this ThunderCats: Summit!
The “lost” ThunderCats are getting their own series that promises to expand the franchise even further. Earlier this year, Dynamite Entertainment revived the ThunderCats to critical and fan acclaim. The publisher promised even bigger and better things for the book's second year, and today the publisher announced the next title in the line: ThunderCats: Lostwhich highlights some of the franchise's most obscure characters.
Dynamite Entertainment announced ThunderCats: Lost today, and the book will be the next entry in a line consisting of the main line ThunderCats book, as well as the soon to be released Silver Falcons. ThunderCats: Lost will be written by Ed Brisson, who wrote the recent and revolutionary Apex one shot. ThunderCats: Lost reunites Brisson with Rapha Lobosco, who designed Apex. Dynamite's synopsis for the book is as follows:
After being shot down in the middle of a war zone, five Thunderian warriors find themselves lost, on the run and fighting for their lives. Trapped behind enemy lines and being hunted by a powerful enemy, the ThunderCats: Lost team invites fans into an all-new take on the franchise and an essential addition to the main title ThunderCats series and sister SilverHawks.
ThunderCats: Lost returns Bengali, Pumyra and Lynx-O to current continuity, and will introduce two new 'Cats as well. The book will ship with a variety of variant covers, including one by Mark Bagley.
Dynamite ThunderCats The revival has been a smashing success
Declan Shalvey and Drew Moss pay homage to the spirit of the original cartoon while moving the franchise forward
Dynamite ThunderCats the title was one of the biggest success stories of 2024. The book's first edition sold more than 100,000 copies before its release, and each month writer Declan Shalvey and artist Drew Moss justify the hype. Shalvey, Moss and their collaborators breathed new life into the ThunderCatsmaking it the best reboot of the franchise to date. ThunderCats' The first year was slow, as Shalvey and Moss gradually reintroduced classic characters and vehicles such as Snarf and the Thundertank. Moss and Shalvey modernize these concepts and, in the case of Snarf, imply that he is much more than fans thought.
Bengali, Lynx-O and Pumyra debuted in the animated film Thundercats Ho!
The team of ThunderCats: Lost are some of the later additions to the mythos, added in later seasons of the original cartoon. Since Lynx-O and company were not part of the initial wave of ThunderCatswhich included Tygra and Cheetara, they are not as well known. Only hardcore ThunderCats fans will remember its existence. ThunderCats: Lost seems to change that, elevating these characters even further and showing that they can be just as compelling as LIon-O or Tygra. Keeping with the spirit of expansion that is a trademark of the Dynamite line, Brisson and Lobosco also created new Thundercats.
While the main Thundercats team is busy with Mumm-Ra and the Mu'Tants on Third World, the Lost Thundercats the team will be in a very different place. Speaking of this new world in ThunderCats tradition, Brisson had this to say:
The world that ThunderCats: Lost the team has ventured into is very different from where our main ThunderCats are, and the trials and tribulations they face as a result are unique to this series – yet equally thrilling and deadly. They find themselves trapped in a highly militarized zone, in a world that eschews magic in favor of hyper-advanced technology. This world is ruled with an iron fist, under a cruel dictator with an innate hatred for cats – so much so that they are determined to put an end to this cat invasion before it takes root. The villains they face will be familiar to ThunderCats fans, but you'll have to read on to find out who they're facing.
Brisson did not provide further details about the identity of the antagonist. Although Mumm-Ra and the Mu'Tants were the team's main enemies, the franchise also featured several other villains – any of whom could be behind ThunderCats: Lost. Dynamite ThunderCats line has, in addition to its new characters, rejuvenated classic villains, such as Mole Master in ThunderCats: Apex.
ThunderCats: Lost It will have a very different tone
ThunderCats: Lost They will be the franchise's equivalent to Suicide Squad or Thunderbolts
And with this new environment comes a new tone, very different from the main line ThunderCats book. Brisson stated that the team was on a “secret mission” and strongly implied that not everyone would make it out alive. Although the stakes for the main ThunderCats book are high, they will be even higher for Thundercats: Lost. Given that the book's protagonists are not well known, the likelihood of one of them being killed during the mission increases. This dark and gritty tone, while very different from what fans have come to expect, is the perfect addition to the franchise.
ThunderCats: Lost #1 goes on sale in March 2025 from Dynamite Entertainment!
