A new Netflix show appears to repeat a Dexter storyline, which potentially makes it a replacement for the original Showtime series. Based on the 2004 novel by Jeff Lindsay Dexter Dreaming DarklyDexter is an entire franchise spanning many seasons and episodes. However, although the series has spread its roots into prequels and sequels since its debut in 2006, the first few seasons of the original show remain its most compelling.
While the show's initial writing deserves credit for its initial success, Michael C. Hall's portrayal of Dexter's moral ambiguity and internal conflicts made the series even more memorable. Given as Dexter has effectively carved its own identity in the crime thriller genre, no show can come close to replacing it. However, a new Netflix series appears to lend a crucial aspect Dexter storyline and even brings its own special touch. The timing of the release also seems perfect because it aligns with the start of a new arc in the Dexter franchise.
The 1992 Flamethrower Killer Has the Same Story as Dexter Morgan
Both killers' violent tendencies are linked to childhood trauma
Netflix 1992 menfeatures a serial killer, Victor, often called the Flamethrower Killer. For obvious reasons, his name derives from the fact that he uses a flamethrower to burn his victims. His method of murdering his victims may be a bit exaggerated and much less meticulous than Dexter Morgan's. However, Victor's story shares many parallels with Dexter's. Just like Dexter, Victor saw his mother cruelly murdered when he was much younger, which served as a trigger for his violent tendencies.
Unlike Dexter, who can easily blend into the crowd without raising any suspicions surrounding his murderous efforts, Victor stands out because he suffered severe burns all over his body when his mother was killed. However, he also manages to disguise himself as a normal member of society to ensure that none of his victims see him coming. He is not part of law enforcement like Dexter. However, similar to Dexter, Victor believes he is committing the murders for a greater purpose, driven by a strong but twisted sense of justice.
As Harry Morgan, Fernando Victoria recognizes Victor's violent tendencies in 1992
Both serial killer characters cross paths with guiding figures
Dexter Morgan and Victor's violent tendencies remain hidden from the rest of the world until they find a guiding force in their respective narratives. While Dexter gets a foster father, Harry Morgan, Victor crosses paths with a man named Victoria Fernando who, unbeknownst to him, is deeply connected to his past. Both Harry Morgan and Victoria Fernando recognize what Dexter and Victor, respectively, are capable of. Instead of trying to help them overcome childhood trauma and suppress violent tendencies, Harry and Victoria encourage them to use them for the “greater good”..”
Harry Morgan creates a fixed code for Dexter, explaining that he must abide by it to ensure he channels his need to kill solely to make the world a better place. The code explicitly mentions that Dexter should only kill other assassins who have escaped the justice system, and his murders should always be motivated by a strong sense of purpose. Victoria Fernando gives Victor access to information about his mother's killers and helps him deduce the right plan to get revenge. Both Harry Morgan and Victoria Fernando are portrayed as questionable figures, shaping Dexter and Victor's moral compass.
1992's Victoria Is Far More Morally Twisted Than Harry Morgan
Harry Morgan had good intentions, but Victoria Fernando didn't
Although it is often debated whether Harry Morgan deserves to be blamed for Dexter's gradual moral decay, most viewers would agree that he always had good intentions. He believed he was helping Dexter satisfy his inherent need to kill, while also making him direct it towards something that would benefit society. As a law enforcer, his moral compass also allowed him to justify the murder of other humans as long as they themselves had a history of violent crimes. Due to this, Harry Morgan's code likely came from a place of genuine concern and desire to protect Dexter.

Unfortunately, for 1992Flamethrower killer, Victoria Fernando sees it as a mere money-making ploy. Although it helps him find the men who murdered his mother and blatantly covered up the crime, he fails to mention that he was also among the perpetrators. By giving Victor limited access to information, Victoria manipulates him into killing all the powerful men involved in her mother's murder. While Victor sets out to seek revenge, Victoria pulls all the strings behind the scenes, threatening Victor's victims and demanding ransoms from them. This makes Victoria the opposite of Harry Morgan.
1992 released on Netflix the same day the Dexter prequel Original Sin premiered
1992 serves as a solid reminder for viewers to get back on the Dexter train
Although 1992 shares some intriguing similarities with Dexterit would be unfair to call him a worthy replacement. The reason is that, despite having a morally gray and compelling character like Dexter Morgan as one of its protagonists, the show falls into the tried-and-true traps of the crime thriller genre. Different Dexterit struggles to establish itself as a standout amongst the mire of other popular genre shows and films. Interestingly, however, 1992 arrived on Netflix the same day as Dexterthe new prequel, Original sin.
Considering 1992similarities with Dextercan be seen as the perfect reminder for viewers to check out Dexter: Original Sin or revisit the original 2006 series.
While only time will tell if the prequel will be as successful and acclaimed as the first few episodes of the main series, the series already appears to have immense potential. Considering 1992similarities with Dextercan be seen as the perfect reminder for viewers to check out Dexter: Original Sin or revisit the original 2006 series. Curious viewers can also skim 1992 because despite its inability to break new ground, Netflix's Spanish show features enough gripping mysteries and realistic characters to keep anyone hooked.
