Notice! Spoilers for Netflix's No Good Deed ahead!
Margo mentions that J.D. was “5150ed” in No good deedbut what does this really mean? Margo and JD (Linda Cardellini and Luke Wilson) are one of three couples trying to buy the Morgan house in the dark comedy Netflix series and, like everyone else, they carry a lot of big secrets. Each episode of No good deed seemed to reveal something new about all of these characters until it was finally revealed who was actually responsible for Jacob Morgan's murder. For a moment, it looked like JD might have been the killer, as he recently had a violent mental breakdown.
Wilson No good deed character was a soap opera star until he brought a .40 caliber pistol to the set during a mental breakdown. JD was later written out of the show and has been unable to find any work since. In No good deed episode 2, “Private Viewing”, JD claims this happened because of the medication he was taking. According to him, his pills were causing hallucinations and impacting his marriage, as his libido also decreased significantly. Margo reminded her husband that she had been with him through this, mentioning how difficult it was for her when he was “5150ed.”
Section 5150 of the Welfare and Institutions Code allows for involuntary psychiatric hospitalization
JD was forcibly hospitalized after his collapse at work
According to California Legislative Information5150 is the legal code attached to the involuntary hospitalization of someone exhibiting dangerous behavior (to themselves or others) resulting from a mental health crisis. J.D. was”5150ed” in No good deedso he must have been hospitalized after his mental breakdown on set. As the event involved a weapon, JD did not need to consent to this hospitalization. It was never stated in the Netflix series how long JD spent in the hospital, and no further details about his medication or mental condition were explored. Instead, JD's story was used to suggest that he could have been a murderer.
Why Margo tried to frame Jacob's murder on JD without any good deeds
Margo knew JD's gun was used to murder Jacob
The .40 caliber pistol that JD brought to the set that led to his hospitalization under code 5150 was the same type of weapon used to kill Jacob Morgan in No good deed. Paul and Lydia Morgan (Ray Romano and Lisa Kudrow) believed it was the 9mm gun that their daughter Emily fired, but it was ultimately revealed that another gun had been fired at the exact same time. Of course, the real culprit was Margo, who was having an affair with Jacob and killed him with JD's gun to prevent her husband from finding out.
When Lydia discovered the truth and confronted Margo, the woman tried to tell her that JD had shot Jacob.
For three years, Margo got away with Jacob's murder because the Morgans hid the evidence to protect Emily (not realizing that she hadn't killed her brother after all). However, when Lydia discovered the truth and confronted Margo, the woman tried to say that JD had shot Jacob. She stated that it was entirely her right to do so since Jacob broke into their home. Still, Margo had no interest in protecting JD. She knew his mental health history was damning and was completely willing to take advantage. Fortunately, Lydia noticed Margo's games in No good deedis ending.
