Jackal's next mission teased by EPs

Warning: The following contains spoilers from the Season 1 finale of The Day of the Jackal. The Day of the Jackalof The EPs tease the Jackal's (Eddie Redmayne) Season 2 missions and his motive after Season 1's shocking twist that sets the TV remake on a different path from Fred Zinnemann's 1973 film and Frederick Forsyth's 1971 novel. Not only does the Jackal get another near-impossible shot, he also lives another day by coming face to face with MI6 agent Bianca Pullman (Lashana Lynch), who was supposed to be the one to catch him.

Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant, the EPs behind the series, explain The Hollywood Reporter what the Jackal is doing in season 2, which has already been greenlit. Neame shares that “there is serious unfinished business“to the Jackal, with the whereabouts of his wife and son are unknown and a debt to be owed. Marchant even jokes that they “know what your priority is, in terms of what your next mission will be', referring to his family, but whether Jackal will succeed is up to season two to answer. Check out what they said below:

Neame: There is some serious unfinished business.

Marching: In fact, we know what your priority is, in terms of what your next mission will be. He's trying to find [his family]. Whether he does or not, we'll see.

What does this mean for Jackal

The Jackal is on a different kind of mission

It looks like the second season will begin where the first season left off. The Jackal fought hard during his last mission to eliminate a tech billionaire, Ulle Dag Charles aka UDC (Khalid Abdalla). Hired by Dance competitor Timothy Winthrop (Charles Dance), the killer was supposed to prevent River's release. However, Jackal can't hit the shot when launching. He makes another attempt at the end of two episodes and finishes the job.

The complication is followed by another problem when the Jackal meets with Zina (Eleanor Matsuura), who is supposed to hand over the remaining balance, except Winthrop doesn't plan on paying for the scam and has set a goal for both of them. A debt is owedbut the Jackal leaves the meeting, hinting that he will find his wife and son first. EPs' commentary confirms where Redwayne's elite soldier-turned-assassin is going and a different kind of mission he will be leading in season 2.

There are many questions The Day of the Jackal season two needs to respond, especially with UDC being Jackal's last work. The Jackal plans to retire, but his plan falls apart when Nuria discovers the truth and escapes with her son. The season 1 finale sees the Jackal completely losing his cool. However, unlike his job, he can't just eliminate Nuria and call it a day. The first season shows Jackal reflecting on his family and leading a double life. Norman warns him that a day will come when he will have to choose.

The decision was made in season 1, when Jackal took over what was supposed to be your last job before retirement. It looks like Season 2 will continue this subtle discussion and hopefully reach a verdict. If the Jackal is able to maintain a family life is a burning question that season two will need to address, especially now with a target on her back, an unpaid debt hanging over her head, and Bianca's discovery of her home life. The highly rated The Day of the Jackal gives fans a lot to look forward to in the season one finale.
