Marvel Rivals' First Collaboration Is Extremely Disappointing

With Marvel's enormous size and influence, it's no surprise that Marvel Rivals has already received its first of many crossover events. Having exploded with nearly half a million players on PC alone, Marvel Rivals has been a hit with fans of the franchise and new players looking for a unique hero shooter experience. While Marvel Rivals More than delivering on the gameplay side of things, their first collaboration missed the mark in capturing the excitement of their new release.

The Marvel company has been no stranger to crossovers and collaborations over the years, with each of its film or video game projects filled with Easter eggs or references to other titles. While the nods to other IPs are a fun inclusion for fans, they lack the excitement of full crossover events that are widely popular in the live services market. While Rival Marveland will no doubt have more collaborations in the future, got off to a bit of a weak start with its latest Fortnite crossover event.

The first collaboration isn't even available in Marvel Rivals

A drop in the bucket for Fortnite collaboration content

Marvel Rivals x Fortnite Crossover Galactic Glider.

As part of Marvel's Rivals promotional content to celebrate and motivate players to try it at launch, from now until January 6th, as shown by HYPEX on X. Players who complete 10 full matches will be eligible for a free Galacta-themed glider in Fortnite. Along with this free cosmetic, players can purchase a new futuristic Dr. Doom 2099 skin pack or a Galacta-themed pickaxe. While they're a fun addition for Fortnite fans, they don't include any real content in Marvel Rivalswhich is a missed opportunity to initiate new players with a free in-game cosmetic incentive.

While the Galacta Glider is just one of many items that span the iconic Battle Royale and Marvel's growing roster of heroes, it doesn't do much to stand out from the pack. The recent Absolute Doom event in Fortnite introduced a wide variety of additions to the franchise with weapons, skins, characters and more, with all this previous content making the Galacta Glider seem like a well thought out addition in comparison.

While the event would likely encourage Fortnite players to try out Marvel Rivals to earn the cosmetic, the complete absence of rewards in Marvel Rivals in itself is a huge disappointment.

How Marvel's Rivals Can Make the Next Crossover Even Better

Taking inspiration from the competition and staying true to your identity

Marvel's Rivals Future collaborations are more likely to be internal than anything else, with a wide range of potential skins and variations on characters from comic book history. Although there is a lot to choose from, It's hard not to get excited about the concept of iconic Marvel characters like Iron Man and Venom sporting apparel from universes beyond the world of Marvel Rivals.

Fortunately for fans, it's unlikely that the creators of Marvel Rival will ignore the growing demand from players for this type of crossover content, best seen in the growing popularity of Fortnite's collaborative characters.

Surveillance 2 has already had enormous success with its crossover skin lines, with the My Hero Academia crossover selling very well, being a likely candidate to enter the market Marvel Rivals, given that Marvel has already collaborated with MHA in the past.

The biggest challenge to including cross content in Marvel Rivals is to ensure that it keeps up with the level of detail and quality that the game offers. Compared to competitors like Overwatch, Marvel Rivals has a much smaller catalog of skins and microtransactions at launch, with each having a much higher level of quality as a result. Given Marvel's Rivals With a focus on quality over quantity, any collaboration event will have to work to fit the game's unique artistic style while staying true to the game's comic book inspirations.
