Wonder Woman origin story has changed several times over the years, but his newest in Absolute Wonder Woman #1 makes more sense. History has tweaked his upbringing, which gives a new layer to his heroism. It also makes more sense for her character based on the roles of Greek gods and goddesses in terms of influence and punishment.
Absolute Wonder Woman #1 has the creative team of Kelly Thompson, Hayden Sherman, Jordie Bellaire and Becca Carey. DC's Absolute line has been reinventing iconic heroes like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. In the case of the Amazonian warrior, her origins took a major turn, forcing her to grow up without her usual mother, Hippolyta, and her home in Themyscira. Although there have been cases where she has been banned from the home for leaving, the place she was raised in doesn't tend to change much. This is not the case in Absolute Wonder Woman #1.
Wonder Woman's Origins Tweaked, Providing Different Glimpses of Olympians
In Absolute Wonder Woman #1Diana is raised by Circe in a place known as the Wild Isle in Hell. As is usual in mythology, Circe is a sorceress. His home is his prison, and Apollo hands Diana over to Circe, who will be her guardian. Instead, Circe becomes the mother of the last Amazon. In this iteration, the Amazons were punished by the Olympians for crimes committed against Zeus – a frequent occurrence in Greek legends for both heroes and other gods. His upbringing in this alternative line of DC storytelling is actually much more appropriate when it comes to mythology.
Many myths highlight severe punishments that Olympians mete out to mortals, whether the people were actually guilty or not. Punishments tend to be severe or even disproportionate to the “crimes”. The circumstances of Diana's birth range from being the daughter of Hippolyta and Zeus to receiving life from the gods. Its best origins came Wonder Woman #1 (1942) and the most recent Wonder Woman Story: The Amazons (2022), in which Aphrodite or the Greek goddesses grant him life. They emphasize the connections between Diana's Amazonian heritage and the conflicts between the Olympian gods and goddesses, focusing especially on the goddesses.
DC's latest take on the Amazons is its most exciting yet
Receiving life collectively from the gods, from Zeus, or being his daughter does not show the complex dynamics between the Olympian gods. This new origin also shows her mirroring a Hercules myth from childhood, creating an intriguing parallel between the two heroes. Diana took control of the traditionally masculine and patriarchal myths here, allowing her to forge her own path that could really anger the gods. The Amazons' punishment is more in line with Zeus' character and pride, giving Diana a more difficult challenge to connect with her roots and a legacy she has lost. Truly punishing the Amazons, removing their role in their daughter's life, shows the wrath of the gods in a cruelly epic way, delivering Wonder Woman its best origin to date.
