Theatrical release on December 13th, September 5th is a gripping historical thriller that starts out like a sports movie. Starring Peter Sarsgaard and Ben Chaplin, September 5th delves into the Munich Massacre, the name given to the hostage crisis that occurred at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, West Germany. At the event, the Palestinian militant group known as “Bloody September” infiltrated the Olympic Village, killing two Israeli athletes and capturing nine others.

A limited theatrical release to start
Outside of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Paramount Pictures holds distribution rights to September 5th. Although Paramount initially planned to give the film a wide theatrical release on November 27, 2024, they pivoted to a limited release on December 13, 2024, with plans for a wide release starting January 17, 2025. September 5th premiered at the Venice Film Festival and, based on that release, won several awards from the Sandiego Film Critics Society. A theatrical release will open the door for future awards seasons and could help September 5th at the next Golden Globes, where it was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama.

At this time, Paramount Pictures has not yet released any official information about when and how September 5th will be released on streaming. Even so, Paramount chose to retain the streaming rights to the film.
