Marvel has copied DC several times, and Squadron Supreme is a prime example of this. At the time, DC wasn’t interested in an Avengers/Justice League crossover. Not wanting to cancel their event, Marvel simply created their own Justice League with the Squadron Supreme and stocked it with obvious parody characters like Nighthawk and Hyperion. That inspiration becomes even more apparent now that Nighthawk has his own version of Batman’s most iconic rogues. This isn’t the first time Marvel has decided to take a page from DC’s book.
Over the years, Marvel has taken quite a bit of inspiration from its main competitors, the most famous example of which is Deadpool, which was clearly based on Deathstroke, even having Wade Wilson and Slade Wilson as their names respectively. Hawkeye was inspired by Green Arrow, and it’s a well-known fact that Thanos was directly inspired by Darkseid. These weren’t just individual characters: the Thunderbolts team, who have an upcoming film, were taken directly from DC’s Suicide Squad.
Marvel has been inspired by each other for decades
This doesn’t mean Marvel is only the one who copied their characters. DC is also guilty of this in many ways, with the most notable examples being Black Racer and Silver Surfer, Commander Steel and Captain America, Red Lion and Black Panther, and many others. many more. The most notable examples would be Aquaman and Namor, with Aquaman being one of DC’s most prominent heroes for many years. When two companies are the biggest in an industry, it’s no surprise that they have overlapping ideas or decide to take inspiration from each other.
DC recently introduced its own version of Spider-Man and has made obvious references to Marvel in the past. There was even an implied secret crisis in which Superman would have to fight the “jade giant”, which is a clear reference to the Hulk. Both companies had dozens of crossovers, such as Justice League/Avengers and the Amalgam Universe. Although the two companies don’t cross paths often anymore, it’s clear that they still have a healthy respect for each other, and that sometimes an idea that starts in DC might just find a way to Marvel The universe after all.
