THE Lilo and Stitch The live-action remake is a reinterpretation of Disney’s animated classic of the same name, and the project continues to provide updates on the film’s cast, plot, and more. One of the few Disney animated films not based on pre-existing material, the original Lilo and Stitch was released in 2002 and revolves around the friendship between a young Hawaiian girl and the destructive extraterrestrial creature she adopts. The success of the first Lilo and Stitch spawned three direct-to-video sequels and three TV series, including an anime, as well as a Lilo and Stitch manga set in feudal Japan. A trailer is revealed
Offering viewers their first real glimpse at the highly anticipated remake, the latest news comes in the form of a trailer for Lilo and Stitch. The 30 seconds provocation opens with a wide shot of Hawaii before cutting to a sandy beach with a sandcastle that looks a lot like Disney’s iconic castle logo. Suddenly, the blue-furred rapscallion attacks the sandcastle and begins to happily knock it down. Perhaps a hint of how closely the remake will follow the original, the teaser is reminiscent of a similar scene from the cartoon in which a jealous Stitch destroys Lilo and Nani’s castle.

The trajectory of live-action Lilo and Stitch The remake has changed drastically over the past few years, but Disney has finally added it to the official release schedule. What was previously supposed to be released on Disney+ in 2024, the film now occupies a prominent spot on Disney’s summer 2025 schedule and will premiere on May 23, 2025. The film is a theatrical release, though it will certainly end up on Disney+ at some point after it leaves theaters.

Who plays who in the live-action remake?
The cast of Lilo and Stitch The live-action film is not without its controversies, and although it is taking shape, some changes have been made. Kahiau Machado was originally cast in the role of David Kawena, but was recast after it was revealed that he had previously used a racial slur. Kaipo Dudoit has since been chosen to play the role. The casting of Sydney Agudong as Nani Pelekai led to the live-action Lilo and Stitch negative reaction when the production was accused of colorism. However, Agudong maintained the role of Lilo’s protective older sister.
On the return front, Chris Sanders will reprise his role in the 2002 animated filmand he will voice the adorable blue alien, Stitch. Perhaps in the most important role in the film Maia Kealoha has been cast as Lilo Pelekaithe rambunctious six-year-old boy who adopts Stitch. Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) will also appear in the film as the Grand Councilor.

What will happen in the remake?
Like the original Lilo and Stitch, the remake will focus on the alien Stitch’s initial plans to wreak havoc as he is pursued by government agents and other extraterrestrial creatures. But Stitch takes on a friendlier nature and finds a new purpose in life when he befriends Lilo. The remake may incorporate additional new plot points from the straight-to-DVD movies and showsbut nothing is known yet.
Most of the original characters will certainly appear, but even some new ones from the rest of the Lilo and Stitch tradition can be introduced. For example, Point! The Movie introduced Stitch’s cousin, Experiment 221, also known as Sparky. By teasing characters like Sparky in the remake, the new version of Lilo and Stitch the story can explore more narrative threads.

In anticipation of the film’s May 2025 release, Disney revealed the first provocation to Lilo and Stitch in November 2024. The teaser opens with a big shot of Hawaii from the ocean, before jumping to a sandy beach and a sandcastle that looks a lot like Disney’s signature castle logo.
