Almost two weeks after hitting theaters, Dwayne Johnson’s film Red It has surpassed a domestic box office milestone, but is still struggling to reach its full potential. The 2024 action film sees Johnson suiting up as Callum Drift, the head of security at the North Pole who is forced to work with hacker Jack O’Malley (Chris Evans) to rescue a kidnapped Santa Claus. THE Red The cast also features JK Simmons as Nick aka Santa Claus, alongside Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt and Kristofer Hivju.
Red managed to cross a major milestone with its theatrical run, as reported by Mojo Box Office. Just over two weeks since its home release on November 15th, the film grossed over $50 million in the U.S.although this still may not be enough to guarantee successful execution. The film’s total budget is estimated at $250 million, with its domestic gross barely earning a third of its cost. Additionally, the Christmas film is struggling in international markets. Bringing its worldwide revenue to around US$ 118 million, Red has not yet realized half of its budget.

New Competition Could Hinder Film’s Holiday Success
Coupled with on-set controversies that painted an alleged picture of Johnson being an uncooperative and problematic cast member, Most critics were not impressed with Red, leading to much negative reception prior to its release. For example, Screen speechSimon Gallagher gave it 3 out of 10 stars, saying that “Red One borders on being tasteless.” When combined with the highly anticipated releases of Gladiator II and EvilJohnson’s holiday film was overshadowed, falling from the No. 1 film domestically to No. 3.
While a stronger audience reception could project better legs during the holiday season, several upcoming releases could surpass the feature. Families in late November and December will have the option to see Moana 2, Mufasa: The Lion Kingand Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in theaters, providing a lot of competition that could push Red out of contention for being a seasonal hit. While Johnson’s film may have little to play in theaters, there is There’s still a chance the holiday action movie will be successful via streaming on Prime Video.

As such, many may wonder whether the feature could have performed stronger if it released closer to Christmas or if it remained in streaming release on Prime Video. While it may not have been able to outperform the competition, it could have enhanced its seasonal appeal to stand out among other, less seasonal releases.
