Due to the console’s poor RAM, it was nearly impossible to avoid enemies and objects suddenly appearing in the frame as the player explored the city. So the developers covered the outdoor spaces with fog and turned off the lights in some interior spaces so that the pop-up wouldn’t be as noticeable.

By the time the sequel was released on PS2, the specifications had improved, but the damage had already been done – the first game was praised for its innovation in using technical limitations to create an eerie atmosphere.and Silent Hill will forever be known as the city shrouded in fog.
