Before the program’s premiere, Screen speech interviewed Richard Gere to discuss The Agencyreturning to the small screen after five years, as he discovered “two angles“to explore his character, the humorous dynamic between his and Wright’s characters, and the general joy of getting to work with”one of our best actors” in Wright.
Bosko’s past has a lot”The same dilemmas“Like a Martian
“At the same time, he learned to be a boss.”
Screen Speech: The Agency It’s such a thrilling ride from what I’ve seen so far, and Bosko is a very interesting and fun character to watch. I’d love to know what your biggest key was to figuring out who this person is and how best to portray them on screen.
Richard Gere: You know, I haven’t seen anything yet, so you’re ahead of me. I know the scripts, but I don’t know exactly what we got. What was important to me is finding these two angles on Bosko, where he himself was in the field credibly, and he was in some way similar, or parallel, or exactly the same dilemmas that we see on Mars, and went through the crises through which Marciano is passing through. At the same time, he learned to be a boss. He’s pulled himself together enough to be an authority figure and be successful at it, to be skilled at managing a huge corporation, essentially this huge CIA office in London, and to be able to alternate between being kind of a street guy and the boss.
I love it, and it really leads to some moments of levity as well as seriousness on your part.
Richard Gere: Well, what was fun to discover with Henry, especially with Jeffrey, is that I think we found a level of how to deal with each other where we could be upset with each other, but we could also be collegial and in on the joke.
Gere and Wright found their characters’ dynamics”Very quickly”
“…how could you not admire Jeffrey Wright?”
So I actually wanted to ask about working with Jeffrey, since from what I’ve seen so far, a lot of your scenes are mostly with him?
Richard Gere: Yeah, no, it’s mostly with him, and a little bit with Marciano and then the bosses in Washington and Langley. Jeffrey, how can you not admire Jeffrey Wright? I mean, he’s one of our best actors, and continues to be, so I was delighted. Obviously, I read the scripts and said, “This is the guy I’m going to work with the most.” So I think Jeffrey and I quickly figured out how we could engage and find our own space to do our work but be very connected.
