If evil returns, it could explore Leland’s half-hearted attempts to do good, revealing a different side to his character.
Evil Star Katja Herbers shed light on why her character doesn’t kill Leland in the show’s latest episode. In the closing stretch of the Paramount+ supernatural horror series created by Robert and Michelle King, Leland goes to a quiet retreat with his rival sister Andrea. However, Leland’s fate in the Evil Series finale could have been a lot more gruesome before Kristen’s friends intervened.
In comments to People After the series finale, Herbers talked about how David and Ben saved Kristen from having to kill Leland and explained that The killing would have weighed on Kristen, regardless of whether he deserved it. She also mentions that Kristen has killed someone before, referring to Orson LeRoux. The quote is included below:
“I think why them [David and Ben] Tone is very sweet. They prevent you from having to do it. We know her [Kristen] had previously killed. She killed a man who certainly deserved it, you could say, because he tried to kill her family and no one did anything and he was a serial killer.”
“You can say it’s justified that she kills him, but I think killing is not good for the soul. Even if you kill someone who deserves it, even if you kill a rapist, murderer, whatever, it can’t be good for Her. And we’ve seen Kristen, the entire second season, deal with the reckoning that she’s killed someone — and it’s hard on the soul.
Evil Season 4 sets up an intriguing Leland story that it fails to explore
Leland is trying to save Kristen…sort of.
It is explored, to a relatively small degree, that Leland may have some small redeeming qualities. Even the plan of Leland’s superiors was to kill Kristen years ago, He protected her from a twisted sense of love. This lasts until he is pressured by his superiors to put an end to Kristen, which would also complete the short investigation of a different side to Leland.

But that other side proves intriguing. Through the process of remote viewing one another, it is teased that Leland and David essentially infected one another. David grows a little darker and is quick to violence, meanwhile Leland, for his part, softens. In an amusing scene, he finds himself crying over cute animal videos online. Then he tries to correct by watching videos of angry brawls.

Because of Evils cancellation, the show had to provide some closure to the central dynamic between Kristen and Leland. But if there was a chance for the supernatural horror to return, it might be fun to see Leland try and fail to do well. He would probably never be thought of as one of the good guys, but it can be fun to watch his half-hearted attempts to be a better person.
