He follows the trail into the woods, where they discover an 80-year-old woman dead in the woods, about to be consumed by a coyote.

An autopsy reveals that Jane Doe suffered dementiaand her family confirms the report when they arrive at the NIS in search of her. The team discovers that the woman lived with her family on the military base, which they did to take care of her. However, the case takes a devastating turn when Franks’ team discovers that the woman’s daughter-in-law was responsible for her horrific death, unable to deal with her mother-in-law’s confused and emotional state.

Gibbs still uses crutches and wears his leg in a cast, suggesting that all of his trauma is new and that he’s not dealing with it well. The moment shows how much Franks was indeed Gibbs’ rock when no one else was there for him.

Instead of blaming Gibbs for his vicious behavior, Franks forcefully tells the agent to stop harassing his secretary while he understands. As they confront each other, Gibbs reaches his breaking point, punching Franks for failing to protect his family. When Franks takes control of the ex-Marine, they fall to the ground and Franks holds Gibbs as he starts to cry. Gibbs reveals that he tried to escape and that he cannot continue living as long as Hernandez is alive.
