Beetlejuice Ends the streak of negative to lukewarm reactionswith VarietyOwen Gleiberman emphasized this “What this new movie delivers is honest nostalgia for the moment when Burton’s clown-spirit-from-hell sensibility still had a frisson of shock value.” Not all critics were won over by Burton’s return to the sensibility of his best work, though, as The GuardianS Xan Brooks notes that “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hits back at the scene of past triumphs. It’s once, twice, thrice a lazy lovable horror sequel.” The balance between nostalgia and innovation is seemingly difficult for the legacy sequel.
Despite not being as groundbreaking as its predecessor, Beetlejuice Looks to be Burton’s best movie in years and a return to form. It’s a much-needed and fitting resurgence for Burton After directing and producing several missing adaptations. Beetlejuice is grounded in the stylistic and narrative preferences that make Burton’s best films feel distinct, this time in a manner full of the director’s own nostalgia.
