Asta reaching Harry in Resident Alien is the catalyst for him abandoning his deadly mission
Asta inviting Harry for a drink is what starts his path away from villainy
Resident Foreigner begins with Harry as the main villain of the series. Although he takes a comedic approach to trying to exterminate the human race, it’s still a textbook nefarious scheme, sported by countless supervillains in sci-fi films and TV shows. With no connection to the planet’s population beyond their mutual love of pizza – and Law and Order – Harry initially has no qualms when it comes to following his orders and committing genocide across the planet. Fortunately, Sara Tomko’s Asta Twelvetrees is there to invite him out for a drink after work, which leads to Harry’s first truly human experience.
Of course, Asta needs Harry’s help to move her things out of her ex-husband’s house, but she also spends quality time with Harry beforehand, allowing them to bond.
Asta is the first person to interact with Harry in Resident Foreigner who doesn’t just want something from him. Other residents of Patience, like Sheriff Mike (Corey Reynolds) and Mayor Ben (Levi Fiehler), just look to Tudyk’s character to help them solve a murder case. Of course, Asta needs Harry’s help to move her things out of her ex-husband’s house, but she also spends quality time with Harry beforehand, allowing them to bond. Harry’s attachment to Asta forms very quicklyand their friendship becomes the basis of Harry’s decision not to kill all humans. Without Asta, Harry would have acted as planned.
Why Asta and Harry’s friendship is so transformative for both of them
Tomo and Tudyk’s characters help each other become themselves
When Asta and Harry first met, Asta was in the final stages of leaving a very abusive relationship. With Harry’s heavy help, she was finally able to free herself from the toxic environment that had shaped her life for years. As the show progresses, Tomko’s character becomes much more self-confidentpresumably recapturing the version of herself from before she ended up in such a dire situation. Although she began the separation process herself, she may not have been able to finish it without Harry’s support.
Inversely, Harry had no connection with anyone before he and Asta crossed paths. All of their interactions were simply the result of an attempt to blend in. As he slowly grows closer to Asta, he begins to develop emotions that his species shouldn’t even be capable of, such as love and friendship. No other character could have taken this away from Harry other than Asta, and without those feelings, Harry’s original plan in Resident Foreigner could have easily walked away without a hitch when he found his lost device.
