Warning: Contains spoilers for Wolverine Annual 2024 #1! The nature of the HulkThe Bruce Banner connection is greatly explored in Marvel Comics lore, as it is known that the two exist in a shared mindscape, and only one personality can inhabit their physical body while the other is effectively in stasis in their mind. And now, the nature of the connection has been totally flipped in Marvel’s all-new Orange Hulk – and it’s actually the source of his greatest weakness.

in Wolverine Annual 2024 #1 by Ezra Clayton Daniels and Yildiray Çinar, Wolverine went to visit the grave of someone who meant a great deal to him. On his journey, Wolverine meets two bearers of the Infinity Stones, Multitude and Apex, who carry the Soul Stone and the Power Stone respectively. Believing that Wolverine is also a stone bearer, Apex attacks the X-Men, as he wants to use the stone that he believes Wolverine has in his possession to make himself stronger. Folk is shocked by Apex’s actions, and jumps to Wolverine’s defense.

With the Soul Stone, Multitude conjures an orange-energy copy of the Hulk, and uses its strength to battle the Power Stone-wielding Apex. While the Orange Hulk puts up a pretty good fight, especially compared to someone literally wielding cosmic power, Apex knows how the power of Multitude works. The synth must maintain constant focus while channeling the Orange Hulk, so all Apex has to do is grab the multitude and throw him away from the fight – and just like that, the Orange Hulk blinks out of existence.

Falk and Orange Hulk must work together in a way Hulk and Banner do not

MCU's Hulk with Marvel's new Orange Hulk behind him.

Although it is impossible for the Hulk and Bruce Banner to exist at the same time (at least, in the physical plane of the Marvel Universe), this thing is the cornerstone of Multitude and Orange Hulk’s connection. Orange Hulk cannot exist without Falk standing right next to him, focusing on maintaining his existence through the Soul Stone. And what’s worse, is that Orange Hulk is not only dependent on the weak ‘boss’, but he can also be defeated if his enemy targets Multitude instead of him.

When the Hulk is in control of his and Bruce’s shared body, he at least does not have to worry about his opponent against Banner, because Bruce is safely stored in their mind during this time. Orange Hulk, unfortunately, doesn’t have that luxury. Multitude is the source of Orange Hulk’s existence, just as Bruce Banner is to the original Hulk, but the difference is that Multitude is also Orange Hulk’s greatest weakness – effectively flipping the original duo’s connection.

Despite this weakness, Orange Hulk still has the potential to surpass the Hulk

Orange Hulk holds an innocent man while battling enemies.

Although Multitude and Orange Hulk have to work side-by-side, exposing a major weakness, this version of sideа Ñ¡ssssssssssersssss-by-side side-by-side side-by-side a major major weakness, this version of the Strongest Avenger still has the potential to surpass the original though. Orange Hulk is not exactly a “Hulk” in the more traditional sense, but is rather a cosmic energy copy of the original, created by the Soul Stone using a fraction of the original Hulk’s essence. This means that Orange Hulk is not just one character, but rather a small part of a vast array of potential forms from across the universe, powered by a piece of the fabric of reality itself.

If ever there was a time when Orange Hulk faced off against the original, this is it Wolverine Annual Comic proves that the original would surely win, because all he would have to do is take Multitude out of the fight and Orange Hulk would simply disappear. However, once Multitude mastered his control over the Soul Stone, it’s safe to say that the original Hulk wouldn’t stand a chance. However, until then, it’s clear that Orange Hulk’s one weakness puts him at a major disadvantage, and flips the original Hulks connection to Bruce Banner.
