What happened to Éowyn after Sauron’s defeat in The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings reveals what happens to characters like Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee after the War of the Ring, but leaves doubts about what happens to Éowyn after The Return of the King. JRR Tolkien’s books offer more information about post-SDA future than the theatrical version of Peter Jackson’s films. However, neither the source material nor the adaptations delve much into its future, as they focus primarily on the story’s protagonists. This is a shame, as Éowyn continues to be one of the Lord of the Rings’ more interesting supporting players.

It is also somewhat inevitable, as there is plenty of time to investigate the consequences of The Return of the King – even in the extended edition of the film. Happily, Those looking for answers about Éowyn’s life after the War of the Ring may find some in Tolkien’s writings.. And there will be opportunities for Warner Bros. Lord of the Rings franchise to expand this further, as an upcoming project will pay homage to his character from the film.

Éowyn and Faramirr marry and raise a child in Ithilien after The Lord of the Rings

The Return Of The King’s Extended Edition alludes to this

Éowyn embarks on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment in The Lord of the Rings, and she has a happy ending when all is said and done. Unfortunately, The Return of the King doesn’t make it that clear. The Lord of the Rings books establish her romantic relationship with Faramirbut it is only in Tolkien’s appendices that we learn that she eventually marries him. Jackson’s films don’t really cover this, although they do allude to their future together through blossoming feelings between the two characters when they meet. The Return of the King.

According to Tolkien, Éowyn and Faramir marry and settle in Ithilien.

According to Tolkien, Éowyn and Faramir marry and settle in Ithilien, where Éowyn becomes known as the Lady of Ithilien and the Lady of Rohan (via Tolkien Portal). The couple also have a son named Elboron after the War of the Ring, continuing both family lines. Unfortunately, not much else is revealed about Éowyn’s life afterward. The Return of the King. She becomes a hero in her own right during The Lord of the Rings’ final act, but she goes on to lead a fairly ordinary life afterwards. And Tolkien doesn’t go into detail when or how it ends.

JRR Tolkien doesn’t reveal much about Éowyn’s life or death after the War of the Ring

Her appendages reveal that she is alive in FA 11

Éowyn on the field after the battle in The Lord of the Rings

Éowyn’s life with Faramir brings together the journeys of both characters The Lord of the Rings to a satisfying ending, but Tolkien leaves what comes next open. His writings do not suggest that the characters do other things of great importance after the War of the Ring, although they obviously play significant roles in Ithilien. But Éowyn’s story ends with her forming a family as far as Tolkien is concerned, and to be fair, it’s a pretty nice conclusion for the character.

Tolkien does not detail how or when Éowyn diesprobably because it’s not relevant to the broader story of Middle-earth. He notes that she celebrates Merry becoming Master of Buckland by sending him gifts, which means she is still alive in the Fourth Age – in FA 11, specifically. It’s good to know that Éowyn and Merry maintain a friendship beyond the events of The Lord of the Rings, although it would be interesting to learn more about Éowyn’s life with Faramir. Maybe the new one from 2024 Lord of the Rings the film will deliver on that front.

The War of the Rohirrim may shed light on Éowyn’s post-Lord of the Rings fate

Miranda Otto’s character narrates the next film

Although Tolkien’s depiction of Éowyn’s life after the War of the Ring leaves much to be desired, Warner Bros. has the opportunity to delve deeper into the fate of Miranda Otto’s heroine. Éowyn narrates the upcoming animated film, The War of the Rohirrim, and the Lord of the Rings the film’s trailer confirms that she is doing this after The Return of the King. We know this because she talks about the War of the Ring in the past tense. And the return of her character in the new Lord of the Rings film means it could reveal what she’s been up to since Sauron’s defeat.

The Rings of Power saw success expanding on the characters in this way, and The War of the Rohirrim has appendices from Tolkien to guide its depiction of Éowyn. The film is unlikely to reveal details about his final years or death, but it could fill in the gaps in Jackson’s films and flesh out his life with Faramir. We don’t know who she’s telling the story of Ivy Hammerhand in the film, but it’s possible she’s talking to her son. If this is the case, there is room for The Lord of the Rings to expand Tolkien’s appendices.
