Baylan Skollthe objectives in Ahsoka strangely reminiscent of a Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order villain’s character arc, so will they also share the same ending? Both Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Ahsoka introduced audiences to several new survivors of Order 66 – while Fallen Order protagonist Cal Kestis remained a steadfast Jedi, especially after he was forced to reveal his true identity in front of Darth Vader’s Inquisitors, the other surviving Jedi introduced in this new Disney era. Star Wars the stories took a much darker and more dangerous twist of fate.
When they were introduced, the late Ray Stevenson’s Baylan Skoll, in Ahsoka and Fallen OrderTaron Malicos were fallen Jedi, their faith in the Order and what it stood for waned after the genocide of the Jedi. While Baylan took on an apprenticeship and became a mercenary, hoping to fulfill his “destiny”, Taron Malicos was trapped in a cycle of violence on the planet Dathomir, completely sure of his power and ability to wield the dark side. While the trajectory of their lives may have been somewhat different, they certainly shared a troubling ideology.
Baylan Skoll looks like an echo of Taron Malicos from Fallen Order
Baylan Skoll and Taron Malicos had different experiences after Order 66, but their final desires are openly similar. Both Baylan and Taron felt the need to reform the Jedi, hoping to change the balance of power in the galaxy. While Baylan reportedly wanted to end the cyclical power struggle between the light side and dark side and would use the dark side to do so, Taron Malicos sought to use the dark side to create his own order. He believed in the superior power of the dark side and planned to understand it better on Dathomir.
Additionally, both wanted to pass on what they learned to the next generation. Baylan Skoll, at some point, summoned his apprentice Shin Hati to work alongside him and taught her how to use the Force. Malicos also sought out an apprentice – in Fallen Orderhe attempted to recruit Cal Kestis to his cause. Kestis, however, was suspicious of Malicos’ true nature and ended up discovering the darker side of the “wanderer”.
Perhaps most importantly, however, Skoll and Malicos were involved with the Nightsisters, manipulating these Force-sensitive witches for their own personal gain.. Baylan Skoll worked as a mercenary for Morgan Elsbeth because he wanted to make the dangerous journey to Peridea in another galaxy. Taron Malicos sought the power of the Nightsisters and remained on Dathomir to discover their secrets, tricking one of the last remaining Nightsisters, Merrin, into believing that it was the Jedi who massacred her people during the Clone Wars, not the Separatists. .
Like Taron Malicos, Baylan claims to desire power
Like Taron Malicos, Baylan’s ultimate desire is power. Despite trying to convince characters like Ahsoka Tano, Sabine Wren and even his apprentice of the righteousness of his cause and the need for an end to the cyclical conflict of good versus evil, Baylan will need strength and power to accomplish his task. He believes he can find this power in Peridea, in another galaxy. Once there, he essentially abandons his apprentice and follows the “voice” that influenced him from the other side of the universe.
Although Baylan is not affiliated with a faction of the Force – the Jedi, the Sith, or the Inquisitors – it has been confirmed that Baylan Skoll is a user of the dark side. Why does he believe the dark side will help him achieve his goal? Why did Taron and Baylan come to rely on this kind of power when they were already tried and true Jedi?
Is the fate of Taron Malicos a clue from Baylan himself?
Eventually, Cal Kestis convinces Merrin that the Jedi were not responsible for the Nightsister massacre and that Taron had been lying to her the whole time. Together, they faced Taron Malicos on Dathomir and defeated him once and for all. Being defeated by two people he once coveted as apprentices must have bothered Taron on some level – after all, he promised them power, and they refused his offer. Is it possible that Baylan will also be killed by his apprentice?
Is it possible that Baylan Skoll will be killed by his apprentice?
In Ahsoka In the final episodes of Season 1, Baylan Skoll essentially left Shin Hati to fend for herself on an abandoned planet with no way of returning home. Grand Admiral Thrawn and the Nightsisters – along with the missing Jedi Ezra Bridger – managed to escape back to Star Wars primary galaxy, and now Shin is trapped in Peridea without any allies while his Master leaves for unknown places, in search of something related to the power of the Mortis gods.
Will Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren, also trapped on Peridea, help Shin see that his relationship with the dark side is doomed?? Can they convince her to join them and turn against her Master, especially if he unleashes a dark power on an unsuspecting galaxy? If Shin joins Ahsoka and Sabine in Ahsoka Season 2, and they take it down Baylan Skoll together, the parallels with the fate of Taron Malicos in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will be even more obvious.
