Key plot element Ahsoka depends on the mysterious ending Star Wars Rebels – the disappearance of Ezra Bridger and Grand Admiral Thrawn. In the last two years before the Battle of Yavin, the Phoenix Cell, the central group in Rebelscame to the attention of Thrawn and his troops. The Phoenix Cell was from the planet Lothal, which at that time was occupied by the Empire.
Shortly before the Battle of Scarif, the Phoenix Group and other rebels decided that the time had come to retake Lothal, culminating in a conflict with Grand Admiral Thrawn’s forces. Ezra played a very important role in this battle and was brought aboard Thrawn’s flagship, the Chimera, to speak with a hologram of Emperor Palpatine. But during an attack by Bridger’s Purrgil, he was able to sneak onto the Chimera’s bridge to challenge Thrawn face to face.
The Chimera was in the atmosphere when it was pulled into hyperspace
Thrawn’s Star Destroyer over Lothal
The Purrgil, summoned by Ezra, then captured the Chimera and even used their tentacles to break through the windows of the Chimera’s bridge. They held Thrawn in place while Ezra used the Force to hold him in place as the Purrgil prepared to jump into hyperspace. This fulfilled the prophecy of the mysterious being known as the Bendu following the Battle of Atollon earlier in the series.”I see your defeat– he said to Thrawn.Like many arms surrounding you in a cold embrace.“
The Chimera was in the atmosphere when the Purrgil jumped into hyperspace. This explains why the tentacles that burst into the bridge did not cause an explosive decompression that killed everyone on board – the type of explosive decompression seen in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The problem, however, is that this doesn’t explain how the people on the bridge survived the ship being pulled into hyperspace.
How could Thrawn and Ezra survive hyperspace travel?
Two Possible Survival Methods
Hyperspace is somewhat mysterious, but one thing is certain; it is a vacuum, like space. This means that this incident is immediately comparable to another in Return of the Jediwhere an A-Wing crashed through the bridge of a Super Star Destroyer at the Battle of Endor and destroyed the entire ship. However, the Chimera was not destroyed, likely thanks to Purrgil keeping it safe and sound. But how could the people on the Chimera Bridge survive?

One possibility is that there were likely emergency energy shields that extended into spaces that once covered the windows.. This technology is not unprecedented for Star warsas the starship hangars seen since the original film are permeable but impenetrable to vacuum. There is also a specific precedent for this, Headhunters #19 Written by Ethan Sachs and Ramon F. Bax, the TIE Defender crashes into the bridge of an Imperial light cruiser, followed by the expansion of red energy shields protecting the bridge from the vacuum of space.
Another possible survival option for Thrawn and Ezra is the Purrgil themselves. These creatures breathe vacuum and travel through hyperspace at will due to the consumption of coaxium-related chemicals. The Purrgil could well have created some sort of vacuum field to keep the Star Destroyer’s occupants alive. and good in the vacuum of space.
How did Thrawn and Ezra survive returning to real space?
New Galaxy
Upon arriving in the strange new galaxy of Peridea, the burial world of Purrgil, Ezra and Thrawn could be in for another surprise: depressurization and landing. Energy protection is likely established due to the precedent set in Headhunters could easily solve this problem. But as the Purrgil’s tentacles wrapped around the ship and the Chimera slowly fell apart, other problems came their way..
Star Destroyers can only land in certain locations, and the entire process requires special landing pads. This was clearly not the case on Peridea, meaning that Ezra and Thrawn’s likely uncontrolled descent would have been another major threat to their well-being. But based on Ahsoka, that they did survive, probably after the Chimera was abandoned by Purrgil in orbit.

However, this calls into question how Ezra was able to escape from the Imperials. He was in the same room as Grand Admiral Thrawn on a Star Destroyer with a full crew. It’s possible that Bridger managed to escape in some kind of escape pod before meeting Noti on Peridea, or perhaps he was simply able to slip away in the chaos of the Chimera’s arrival in the new galaxy – a similar approach he took in Ahsoka.
Ahsoka is a science fiction television series based on the Star Wars universe, developed by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. Starring Rosario Dawson, the series follows Ahsoka Tano as she works with Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), her loyal droid Huyan (David Tennant) and Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) to prevent the return of the villainous Grand Admiral Thrawn. Ahsoka serves as a live-action sequel to the animated series Star Wars Rebels.
