Notice! Spoilers ahead for Daredevil #15!I hate to say it, but it seems Daredevil The closest friend has become a new enemy, complete with the power to destroy the Man Without Fear. The last year of Matt Murdock’s life has been complicated, to say the least, as his friends and enemies have been corrupted by Daredevil’s personal demons.
After being literally put in Hell, Daredevil was given a second chance at life and abandoned his career as a superhero for the life of a priest. However, Matt did not return alone, as pieces of his soul, infected by the Seven Deadly Sins, came to Earth and began possessing people in Matt’s life. Now it seems someone has taken control of the person Daredevil loves more than anything.
I’m Calling: Daredevil’s Best Friend Has Been Possessed
One of Daredevil’s sins claimed Foggy Nelson
In Daredevil #15 by Saladin Ahmed, Luigi Zagaria, Jesus Aburtov and Clayton Cowles, both Hell’s Kitchen Daredevils investigate the death of a PI killed by a sin that has been haunting Matt. Matt blames himself, saying that the terrible things of the Seven Deadly Sins are his punishment for escaping Hell, but Elektra reminds Matt that he does not embody any of the Sins that pursued him. Elsewhere in Hell’s Kitchen, a young man named Rizzy, intent on suing Father Matt, meets with a shady lawyer, who informs Rizzy that Daredevil won’t be a problem for long.
Daredevil meets with Father Javi to discuss a boy who was kidnapped from Javi and Matt’s group home. During their meeting, Matt confesses his recent crisis of faith regarding the Seven Deadly Sins, although Javi helps Daredevil see that it is not God behind the demons’ attack on Hell’s Kitchen. Their conversation is interrupted when a freshly murdered body appears on the city streets and Daredevil immediately begins tracking down the monster who did this. Daredevil determines that the demon is the Sin of Wrath and fights him on top of a building before effortlessly defeating Matt.
Someone knocks on Matt’s door and, to his horror, he detects no heartbeat from the visitor.
Matt wakes up the next morning in a hotel room, not knowing how he got there or, even more disturbing, who took off his costume and cleaned it for him. Someone knocks on Matt’s door and, to his horror, he detects no heartbeat from the visitor. Matt answers the door and finds nothing but a letter waiting for him. But to Daredevil’s surprise, the letter is actually a legal subpoena from the law firm Nelson & North.Foggy Nelson’s new practice.
How the Seven Deadly Sins Came After Daredevil
Who was infected by Matt Murdock’s demons?
This harrowing chapter in Matt Murdock’s life began when he embarked on a crusade to destroy the Hand for good. Unfortunately, Daredevil failed in his mission and countless souls, including Foggy’s, were taken to Hell. Matt traveled to the underworld to free the damned souls, where he fought the Hand’s avatar, the Beast, and his sister, the Wild One. Although it appeared that Daredevil died in the fires of Hell, he managed to escape and was given a new life by a higher power, where he began living as Father Matt, with few memories of his life as Daredevil.
But it wasn’t long before Matt was dragged back to his old life. Elektra was possessed by the sin of Sloth and attacked Father Matt, who exorcised the demon and helped Matt regain some of his memories. Father Matt began to return to his old life, where he discovered Several of Daredevil’s allies were also tainted by other sins that corrupted pieces of his soul. Ben Urich was possessed by Envy, She-Hulk was taken by Gluttony, and Wolverine was controlled by lust (bloodlust, that is).
…several of Daredevil’s allies were also tainted by other Sins…
It wasn’t just allies who were taken in by Daredevil’s sins. Greed naturally gravitated toward the most obvious person in Matt’s life, Wilson Fisk. Although Fisk gave up running Hell’s Kitchen, Greed pushed the gangster back to his old life, becoming the local Kingpin once again. Fortunately, Daredevil was able to identify Greed and helped Fisk purge the demon from his body. Fisk was so shaken by the events he saw, Daredevil’s archenemy even gave up his life of crime and began genuinely seeking redemption.
Which of Daredevil’s worst sins is in Foggy’s control?
I think Foggy is embodying Daredevil’s wrath
So far in Daredevil’s current run, we’ve seen Daredevil exorcise five sins: Sloth, Envy, Gluttony, Lust, and Greed. That leaves just Wrath and Pride, and this question hints at both. When Rizzy meets with the lawyer (who is definitely Foggy, given how the issue ends), Foggy mentions how proud Rizzy should be for coming forward and takes the time to brag about how good he is in court. Later in the edition, Daredevil chases the demon Wrath and during the fight, he makes the suspicious remark that fighting Wrath is “as effective as fighting fog“.
Wrath could have killed Daredevil during the fight, but he held back…
I’ve been waiting for a Sin to possess Foggy since the moment we discovered the Sins were corrupting Daredevil’s allies. But the question now is which of them put Foggy under their spell? Pride seems to be the path the comics are going down (and it would be ironic considering how many times Matt’s pride has gotten in the way of his friendship with Foggy). But truth be told, I’m more inclined towards Foggy being under Wrath’s command.
Think about how many times over the years Foggy lost control and gave up on his and Matt’s friendship because of the secrets he was keeping. Hell, during their last conversation, Foggy actually criticized Daredevil for hiding the fact that he was still alive to ‘protect’ Foggy. Additionally, Wrath could have killed Daredevil during the fight, but held back, and then Daredevil woke up safe and sound in freshly laundered clothes. In my opinion, Foggy is under Wrath’s control, and he is desperately trying to get Daredevil to help him.
Daredevil has to face his worst traits to save his best friend
Matt only manages to free Foggy by finally dealing with his anger
It’s actually perfect that Wrath took Foggy. Anger has always been one of Matt’s worst traits and has done more damage to his relationship with Foggy than any other sin. Now, the living embodiment of rage is controlling the person Matt hurt the most thanks to his wrath. I don’t think Foggy is very far away yet, but Wrath is by far the most effective and relentless Sin we’ve seen yet. If Reckless wants to save his friend, he will have to face his demons once and for all.
