It’s a Beetlejuice ending, but it’s a happy ending. So, I think for us, that’s what we really wanted—the emotional mother-daughter story that really played through all the bunkers and brains of the movie. And Beetlejuice, interestingly,—because of being an agent of chaos and being selfish and only really in it for himself—helps put this family together.

One of our ambitions for the movie was that once you start watching the movie, you have no idea how it’s going to end. It goes to a place of absolute bunker madness, which is just right for a Beetlejuice movie. [At the same time]It is the most joyous movie about death and grief you can imagine. Hopefully in the end it will put a smile on your face, which is, I always think, the best thing a movie can do.
