What the open casting call means for the Harry Potter TV show
As it is similar to the casting of two original Harry Potter actors
Often with movies and TV shows, filmmakers will have ideas about which actors they want to cast ahead of time. An open casting call, however, means that a production is willing to consider all applicants Regardless of acting experience. This new casting call is similar to the two originals Harry Potter Cast members were found, with both Grint and Watson having been cast as a result of such an approach. Watson, for example, had no experience as an actor when she was finally cast after a series of auditions and callbacks.

The casting call also speaks to how faithful the TV show will be to Rowling’s source material, with Harry being 11 years old in the first book. Accepting applicants down to nine also makes sense from a production standpoint, as the actors will likely age faster than their characters. Finally, the April 2025 date in the casting call could suggest that this is when filming will take place, and this would be in line with the 2026 release window that was previously reported.
Our take on the Harry Potter casting call
The new Harry, Ron and Hermione face a tough challenge
Although Radcliffe may have been sought out by production and encouraged to audition, casting a wide net for other characters led to some perfect casting decisions for the Harry Potter Movies. It is difficult to imagine the movies, for example, without Grint, Watson, and Draco Malfoy actor Tom Felton, among others. Taking the same approach and casting based solely on the substance of an audition, as opposed to basing a decision on previous work, may ultimately be the best thing for the upcoming TV adaptation.
Even with strong casting, however, Radcliffe, Grint and Watson have set the bar for success very highAnd audiences who grew up with the films may struggle to accept new versions of the characters and stories. With thousands of children around the UK and Ireland sure to send in autographs, the audition process will obviously take some time, and it’s possible that an update on casting won’t arrive until next year. With this latest announcement, however, the Harry Potter TV show is now one step closer.
