John Wick’s Chad Stahelski Teases Age-Spanning Action in His Highlander Reboot Film

Chad Stahelski promises important scenarios and lots of action in his Highlander restart, as well as revealing the filming window. Stahelski is best known as the talented force behind the John Wick franchise, directing all four main installments of the franchise. Branching off from the tales of the Continental and the titular assassin, The director’s next big project is a reboot of the classic film Highlander. The film is based on the 1986 film about an immortal Scottish swordsman who must face the last of his opponents. THE Highlander The reboot film will feature Henry Cavill in the lead role.

Talking to The directStahelski teases the action in his Highlander restart. The director begins by explaining like this Highlander the reboot is dealing with its multi-century time jumpssaying they are”bringing it from the early 1500s in the highlands to beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong.” In these time jumps, Stahelski promises that there is “great opportunity for action.” It also provokes a “Widespread of a character arc” for Cavill’s lead role. And we’re moving forward from the early 1500s in the highlands to beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong, and seeing how that happens. There is a huge opportunity for action. There is a chance to play a character that few people can play. And it’s a bit like a love story, but not like you think. In ‘John Wick,’ I learned a lot about how to twist the narrative a little… another kind of myth.

My selling point was, to [Henry Cavill]Look, you have a guy who has been alive for over 500 years. He’s the last person in the world who wanted to be in this situation. So you get to cover a wide swath of a character arc there. And do you know someone who coached for over 500 years and half played [with many types of] martial arts.

What this means for the Highlander reboot

Highlander will add a futuristic touch

Highlander it has always been a story of several centuries. This is a byproduct of its protagonist, who was born a 16th-century Scottish swordsman but, according to the original story, lives as an antiques dealer in 1985 New York. From Stahelski’s description, the setting for the Highlander the reboot will be a little different. In the original film, 1985 was the present day. Instead of defining Highlander in 2023 or 2024, however, Stahelski will “beyond the present day“, bringing a futuristic element to the fantasy film.

Stahelski’s quote also reveals some of the nature of the action in Highlander. The director not only promises great action sequences, but also teases how Cavill’s leadership used his multi-century life to obtain “martial arts“skills from multiple eras in history. As Highlander moves through time and between parts of the world, it will be fascinating to see how this main character’s fighting style evolves.

From your work at John Wick films, Stahelski showed how his cinema is influenced by styles such as the Hong Kong gun-fu subgenre. Even on US-based sets, John Wick is seen fighting in this gun-fu style. Setting part of the plot in Hong Kong will further accentuate this stylized action element when it comes to Highlander.
