Best Team for the Ultra League in Pokémon GO (Max Out Season)

The Ultra League is where things start to heat up in the Pokémon GO Battle League, providing a mid-range challenge for trainers who want to battle with their favorite Pokemon. It is A limit of 2500 cp on any pokemon that comes in, which means there’s room for a few legendary pokemon to flex their muscles, but it’s not quite as chaotic and expensive as the unrestricted master league.

Ultra League fans have been comfortable with a relatively predictable meta for a long time, but thanks to the arrival of the Max Out season and its huge GO Battle League shakeup, things are starting to look very different. Old favorites have plummeted down the rankings thanks to a string of attack nerfs, while newcomers have risen in their wake, so forming the best team possible can be tricky.

Feraligatr, Lickilicky and Virizion make a great team

One of the best teams you can use for the Ultra League after the massive Max Out update is Feraligatr, Lickilicky and Virizion. These three Pokemon will give you plenty of coverage options, with a mix of Ghost, Water, Ice, Fighting, Grass, and Normal-type attacks between them. All of these together should give you an answer for most opponents you end up facing.

Feraligatr currently looks like one of the best choices for the Ultra League, with an excellent moveset that allows it to dish out Water-type and Ice-type charged attacks at a rapid pace thanks to Shadow Claw’s incredible energy generation. Its stats are decent across the board, and it only has two major weaknesses, making it an easy recommendation for any trainer’s team in the Ultra League.

Being a normal type Pokemon means that Lickilicky can deal fairly neutral damage to opponents with only one weakness to worry about, while its impressive scope will allow it to stay on the battlefield and keep some heat when you’re in a bad situation. Rounding out this team with the versatile Virizion gives you an answer for Swampert, Lickilicky, Cobalion and other key players, although it has a few weaknesses that you need to watch out for.

An alternative team to try for the Ultra League would be Feraligatr, Malamar and Galarian Weezing. This is another set of three Pokemon that work very well together, covering each other’s weaknesses and providing you with plenty of coverage options. Although these recommendations should serve you well, it is important to remember that there is no such thing as an “ultimate” team, as their effectiveness will always depend on which Pokemon your opponent sends.

If you don’t have any of the Pokemon recommended above, don’t worry, because there are many more that have potential in the Ultra League. I would suggest giving PvPoke a visit and seeing which of the top-ranked Pokemon you already have in your collection, and focus on powering them up as close to 2500 CP as possible. You’ll also need to teach them their optimal movesets and make sure their IVs are decent with the review feature.

Interestingly, many of the Pokemon also topped the rankings in the big league of the Max Out season, such as Malamar, Feraligatr and Pangoro. Although you won’t be able to use a single Pokemon across both leagues, thanks to the difference in CP limits, you can go the extra mile to breed candy for a specific species and build two of them, one for the 1500 CP limit and another for the 2500 CP limit.

While it’s all well and good in stats and rankings, one of the most important tips I can give for the Ultra League is to get out there and practice. What works for another trainer may not work for you. Try different team compositions and see what you have the most success with.

When does the Ultra League run?

It is a regular feature in the Go Battle League

You can compete in the Ultra League from Tuesday 10 September to Tuesday 17 September 2024. It will run alongside the Galar Cup: Small Edition, which is a 500 CP format cup that only allows Pokemon that appear in the Galar region to compete. While this limits your options, the low CP limit makes it much more accessible to new trainers than the Ultra League.

If you miss the run of the Ultra League, or you don’t have enough time to make the best team possible, it will return again from September 24 to October 1, 2024. As one of the three main leagues in Pokémon GO, you can expect The Ultra League to return frequently throughout the Max Out season, so there will be plenty of opportunities to test your metabolism.
