Jay and Silent Bob the films saw the iconic stoner duo playing supporting characters as well as leading their own films, and despite the wacky absurdity, they have a sort of continuity and chronological order. Writer/director Kevin Smith became an indie sensation thanks to his micro-budget debut Clerks in 1994. This was also the film that introduced the world to Jay, a foul-mouthed, obnoxious, pot-loving punk, and his nearly mute friend, Silent Bob. The popularity of these characters would lead to them appearing in several other films that followed.
Long before the MCU, Smith created his own cinematic universe with the View Askewniverse, with Jay and Silent Bob as the common thread running through all the films. The characters have appeared in cartoon series and even shows and films outside of Smith’s cinematic universe.but View Askewniverse’s Jay and Silent Bob films show the characters’ wild journey together in a chronological way that makes sense. With Smith announcing another Jay and Silent Bob movie on the horizon, fans can prepare for it by reviewing all of his films in order.

The pair agree to help Brodie and TS ruin a dating game show held at the mall when TS discovers his girlfriend is appearing in it.

Jay and Silent Bob are the only returning characters, but the film was the first time Smith cast frequent collaborators Jason Lee and Ben Affleck.

Clerks was the film that started Smith’s career and the View Askewniverse. The film was also an extremely influential independent film at the time, showing aspiring filmmakers the kind of audience they could reach even with low-budget films they made on their own. The black and white comedy follows a convenience store clerk who is called into work on his day off and simply follows him through his many misadventures throughout the day.
Randal (Jeff Anderson) is also introduced for the first time with him and Dante appearing in two other Clerks films and having several cameos in other Smith films.
Just like Kevin Smith, Clerks also introduced Jay and Silent Bob to the world, with the duo playing supporting roles as a couple of aimless junkies who spend all their time outside the store trying to sell drugs. The duo ended up being the film’s scene stealers despite their minor role. Randal (Jeff Anderson) is also introduced for the first time with him and Dante appearing in two other Clerks films and having several cameos in other Smith films.

Chasing Amy was the first time that Ben Affleck starred in the lead role in one of Smith’s films, while also being Smith’s first attempt at a romance story within the View Askewniverse. Affleck and Jason Lee play comic book creators named Holden and Banky, whose friendship is tested when Holden falls in love with Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams), who is gay. Even though Alyssa wants to be friends, Holden is hopeful that there is a chance for romance.
Of all the View Askewniverse films, this one has the shortest screen time for Jay and Silent Bob. The pair only appear in one scene near the end of the film. However, the film also presents an important new aspect of its characters, as Holden and Banky created the comic book characters Bluntman and Chronic based on Jay and Silent Bob.

Dogma was Kevin Smith’s attempt to show that View Askewniverse could be used in other genres, moving from simple, grounded comedies to full-scale fantasy comedy.. The film stars Linda Fiorentino as a woman descended from Jesus Christ and the only person on Earth who can stop two banished angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) from re-entering heaven and thus bring about the end of all existence.
This Jay and Silent Bob film is easily the most ambitious and brings many exciting new cast members to the View Askewniverse, including Alan Rickman, Salma Hayek, and Chris Rock. However, Jay and Silent Bob also appear to join the adventure as they are drawn into the high-stakes mission. This is also the first time in View Askewniverse that the fast food chain Moobys is mentioned, which is featured in several later films.

Jason Lee appears as Brodie from Mallrats and Banky from Chasing Amy.
The film is packed with cameos, from Mark Hamill spoofs Star Wars to Will Ferrell as a bumbling lawman. However, several other characters from other View Askewniverse films also appear. Jason Lee appears as Brodie from Mallrats and Banky from Chasing Amy. Meanwhile, Ben Affleck appears as Holden as well as himself alongside Matt Damon in a hilarious bit about their film sequel. Goodwill Hunting.
A special appearance by Alanis Morissette as God of Dogma at the end of the film suggests this was supposed to be the final View Askewniverse film, but it ended up not being like that.

More than a decade after the first film launched Kevin Smith’s directing career, he returned with Clerks II. The film begins with Dante still working at the Quick Stop, but it burns down, causing him to get a job at Moobys. The film follows Dante and Randal going about their business and having meaningless conversations, just like the original. However, sometimes there is a more serious tone, as it is also about these men facing the realities of adulthood.
Jay and Silent Bob return for the sequel, but show no signs of maturing. This Jay and Silent Bob film features less overt references to the other View Askewniverse film, operating more as a standalone tale. However, several of Smith’s frequent collaborators, such as Ben Affleck, Jason Lee and Ethan Suplee appear in the film in new roles.
Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019)
Jay and Silent Bob try to stop a reboot
Jay and Silent Bob reboot works as a sequence of Jay and Silent Bob counterattack, as well as being another culmination of the View Askewniverse. The film largely retcons the plot of the first film, with the iconic stoner duo deciding to stop the Bluntman and Chronic film reboot. However, this film also shows the first sign of growth for Jay as he meets the daughter he never met (played by Kevin Smith’s real-life daughter, Harley Quinn Smith).
Jay and Silent Bob reboot also includes cameos from the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Val Kilmer and director Kevin Smith as himself. Justin Long also reprises his role as Zack and Miri make a porn movieunofficially bringing this film to View Askewniverse, despite Jay and Silent Bob not appearing in it.
Clerks III (2022)

Clerks III is the last film that ends the trilogy that began with Kevin Smith’s first film. Mirroring some of Smith’s real-life events, the film shows Randal having a heart attack and deciding he wants to do something with his life and so makes a movie about working at the convenience store. The film takes a meta-approach like the film Randal makes ends up being the original Clerks film. While Jay and Silent Bob appear once again in supporting roles, this is once again a story about the friendship between Dante and Randal.
To date, this is the last Jay and Silent Bob film. However, Kevin Smith made plans to bring the pair back for the third standalone film.. Instead of focusing on Jay and Silent Bob in Hollywood once again, the film will be about the battle of the legal marijuana business in New Jersey. Smith also provoked a Mallrats called sequence Twilight of the Mallrats which would probably bring Jay and Silent Bob back as well.
Jay and Silent Bob’s timeline isn’t that important
The truth is, it doesn’t really matter what order the Jay and Silent Bob movies are watched in. The two are mostly friends who simply wander through life, smoking weed and sometimes giving advice, some of it unwarranted. For them, they can have great adventures, but their lives are not a matter of structure or moving through life in any predetermined order. Asking the characters may reveal that they don’t even know when the big events in their lives happened.
Jay also has a daughter who was born from the events of that previous film.
There is only one case where the chronology of the films comes into play. This is the way to Jay and Silent Bob strike back to Jay and Silent Bob reboot. This is the only case of the duo in which their past extends to the present day. They decided to stop a film based on their similarity for the second time in the 2019 film and mentioned that they had done this before. Jay also has a daughter who was born from the events of that previous film, but this is the only case where the timeline matters.
In Mallratsthe dialogue puts it first in the timeline, but nothing else matters based on when or where it occurs. They go from Quick Stop to Mooby’s, but it’s just them going to where they need to be at that moment in their lives. When watching Jay and Silent Bob films, it’s almost a life story, very similar to the first two Clerks movies, but unlike Dante and Randal, Jay and Bob never learn anything or mature and are in the same place at the end of their journeys.
