Visions Season 3 will be the best yet as it brings together the 8 best anime studios

Disney has officially announced the return of its hit anime anthology series, Star Wars: Visions, for a third season, set to release in 2025. Revealed during the 2024 Disney APAC Content Showcase, the highly anticipated third season will once again explore Star Wars through the creative lenses of leading Japanese anime studios. Following the series’ second season, which utilized varying animation styles from global studios, the upcoming third volume returns to the first season’s anime roots, delivering nine shorts from nine creators.

THE Star Wars: Visions anthology debuted in 2021, captivating audiences with its unique blend of Star Wars Japanese mythology and animation. Produced by seven renowned anime studios, including Kamikaze Douga and TRIGGER, the series offered reimaginings of a galaxy far, far away with a uniquely Eastern twist. Volume 2, released in 2023, expanded its horizons with a global approach and incorporated animations from diverse countries such as India, Spain, South Africa and more. This impressive collaborative feat incorporated more artistic and cultural perspectives, but sacrificed some of its cohesion.

Major Anime Studios Return for Season 3 of Star Wars: Visions

Two global phenomena join forces once again

For Volume 3, the anthology brings back acclaimed collaborators Kamikaze Douga, Kinema Citrus Co., Production IG and TRIGGER, responsible for classics like Ghost in the Shell and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. The return of these anime stalwarts is a promising sign of the quality of Volume 3, given their previous work on Volume 1. Among the five new entrants are ANIMA, a co-production with Kamikaze Douga, David Production, Polygon Pictures, Project Studio Q, and WIT Estúdio . Each of these studios is celebrated for their distinct approach to storytelling, indicating that this new season will continue to push creative boundaries.

With its innovative format and culturally infused narrative, Star Wars: Visions became a beloved entry in the long-running space opera franchise by mixing Star Wars iconography with stylish anime action. Star Wars animated series visuals have always been hit or miss, but Visions brings George Lucas’ original creation to life as a real work of art. The return to anime-only storytelling promises to showcase the unparalleled artistry of Japanese animation while expanding Star Wars‘ mythology in ways that live action can never capture. Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 will debut in 2025, with more details to be revealed as the date approaches.
