Warning: Spoilers for Black Clover chapters #374-6!
When Black CloverAfter the three most recent chapters were released in November 2024, most fans were understandably focused on Yami’s big transformation, in part because the title’s reduced publishing rate with Jump GIGA made the big events more impactful for fans. The fact that Yami’s transformation was the culmination of some foreshadowing in Yami and his sister’s story also helped drive the significance of the moment.
However, one of the scenes in the three chapters was much more movingserving as another perfect execution of using revived fallen characters as Paladins. This scene involves Yami’s second-in-command, Nacht, and shifts focus to another prominent member of the Black Bulls, making good use of an earlier flashback and also providing more backstory for the character, even in the midst of the series’ final battle. .
Black Clover brings back the tragic story of Nacht and Morgen
Black Clover Written and Illustrated by Yuki Tabata
In chapter #375, Nacht discovers that not only has his deceased brother Morgen been brought back to life as a Paladin, but also that he is being controlled by the demon Lucifugus. The ramifications of this revelation are enormous when considering his backstory, which readers first learned about in #286. In the flashback, Nacht essentially indirectly kills his brother Morgen when he foolishly summons the demon Lucifugus. As the devil continues to rage, Morgen, who was present at the time of the summoning, successfully seals Lucifugus back, but not without being mortally wounded first and eventually dying.
On its own, this story was indeed quite tragic for obvious reasons, but it also helped explain the complexity of Nacht’s character, as he was originally adamant about not becoming a Magic Knight, but was one in the present day. From the flashback, it is assumed that Nacht broke his ideals in part because of his brother’s regret that they never fought side by side in that role.
However, chapter 375 adds many more layers to Nacht’s relationship with Morgen through the demon Lucifugus, worsening the situation that killed Morgen. Now, not only did Nacht’s actions result in his brother’s death, but the very thing he summoned, which killed Morgen, now controlled his living corpse. From Nacht’s perspective, his sin impacted his brother not once, but twice. Another tragic way of looking at the matter is that what drove Morgen away from his brother, killing him, has now brought him back from the dead and forced him to fight him. At the end, Nacht has to kill his brother twice.
Black Clover’s big fight between Nacht, Morgen and Yami is the best closing chapter in its story
The series makes the long wait worth it again
The scene also serves as a continuation of not only the story of the two brothers, but also their relationship with Yami. Much earlier, in chapter #323, Yami and Nacht fought side by side for the first time after having an incredible fight when Yami became a Magic Knight against Nacht’s wishes and then befriended his brother. It’s crucial to realize that although Nacht had already removed Yami from his life by that time, it was Morgen’s death that cemented the resentment Nacht harbored toward Yami.
Even though the two effectively “buried the hatchet” in chapter #323, the introduction of the Paladins introduced the opportunity for them to face their demons (or devils) on a deeper level, and Yami and Nacht’s battle against Paladin Morgen allowed -them. do exactly that.
So while Yami’s transformation is quite monumental, it is immediately surpassed by the impeccable method by which Black Clover continues to use the concept of Paladins to not only exacerbate a tragic death from a backstory that was believed to have ended, but to effectively conclude a story between three characters once separated by death.
Asta and Yuno, orphans who share the dream of becoming the Wizard King, follow different paths: Yuno with natural magical abilities and Asta with determination despite his lack of powers.
