Ladypool actress Blake Lively helped change Deadpool and Wolverineis ending on a note, and I’m glad she did, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie has changed for the better. Watching Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman share the big screen as fully realized versions of Deadpool and Wolverine was a dream come true. The pair had perfect chemistry throughout the film, with the rest of the Deadpool and WolverineThe cast was an exciting choice that ranged from newcomers to MCU veterans and more. Beating Emma Corrin’s Cassandra Nova was a challenging missionand the heroes had to do everything to be victorious.
I thought Deadpool and WolverineThe ending was moving. I liked that the film made it seem like the heroes had sacrificed themselves to stop Cassandra Novaonly for it to be revealed that Deadpool and Wolverine survived the ordeal. Although there were some good character moments after that scene, including Dafne Keen’s X-23 having dinner with Wolverine, Deadpool and his friends, and Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm returning to Deadpool and WolverineIn the post-credits scene for a hilarious moment, that sacrifice sequence was the highlight of the film. Because of this, I’m surprised to see that it didn’t initially happen that way.
Blake Lively’s Note Led to Deadpool and Wolverine’s Final Change
One of the most touching scenes in the MCU movie just got better
Deadpool and WolverineThe digital release includes some cool bonus features. One of the biggest of these is Filmmaker Commentary, which includes audio commentary from director Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds. Levy had some interesting details to reveal about Deadpool and Wolverine almost sacrificing himself. Originally, There wasn’t supposed to be any suspense after the duo managed to destroy the Time Ripper and put an end to Cassandra Nova’s plans. Reynolds’ Deadpool and Jackman’s Wolverine would have survived almost immediately. However, Blake Lively, Reynolds’ wife and Ladypool actress, made a suggestion.
Levy explains that Lively said there should be some suspense to let the audience feel like the characters didn’t survive, even for a moment. While Deadpool and Wolverine were always expected to survive after the explosion, making the audience wait a while for it made the reveal that they had survived more powerful. As Levy says, the moment led to a “much more satisfying“payoff to what was the film’s biggest emotional plot point. Check out the full quote below:
Ryan Reynolds: We only did a day and a half of reshoots for the film, which we are very proud of. These types of films typically involve weeks of reshoots. But this speech by Mateus is one of the pieces we refilmed. And he is miraculous.
Shawn Levy: And credit where credit is due. In the past there was no suspense, the power room exploded and our heroes survived. And it was Blake Lively who told us, ‘You know, I was with you all through the movie. I want to sit in fear that they are lost. Let me stay in that place of suspense, so that the triumph of their survival is more emotional and visceral.1
That was a note from Blake and it really opened up a new way of thinking about that part of the film, which is why we did this remake… and here, the payoff is much more satisfying.
Deadpool and Wolverine’s final switch gave us one of the film’s best moments
One of the film’s villains got a hilarious scene
Not only do I agree with Lively’s note, but I’m also glad this happened because it led to another Deadpool and Wolverine scene entering the film. As Ryan Reynolds explained in the MCU movie commentary, Matthew Macfadyen’s Paradox Dialogue after the heroes apparently sacrificed themselves was an added moment Deadpool and WolverineThe reshoots. Interestingly, Reynolds also noted that the Deadpool movie only had “a day and a half of reshoots”, which makes the Paradox scene a very important addition in the eyes of the filmmakers, something I agree with.
The sequence allows Macfadyen to really let loose in the role in the most wonderful way possible. Paradox is a nasty villain, and it’s fun to see the character try to get out of a sticky situation with TVA Judge B-15. The moment has a hilarious payoff when it’s revealed that Deadpool and Wolverine survived, and Paradox realizes that his effort was in vainyelling “Screw this!“I think Paradox’s disbelief at her return and subsequent loss was very satisfying, and the moment became a viral trend on social media, all because of Lively’s note.
Why I’m So Happy Deadpool and Wolverine’s Ending Changed
Paradox’s hilarious moment isn’t the only reason
Paradox’s big speech and frustration create a hilarious moment near the end of the film. However, I think Blake Lively’s note helped Deadpool and Wolverine on a deeper level. As director Shawn Levy mentioned, I agree with Lively’s idea that there needed to be some time between Deadpool and Wolverine seemingly dying to destroy the Time Ripper and when it is revealed that they are alive. If the film had just shown that the characters were safe after a big moment that slowly turned into what appeared to be their death, then the excitement would have died down.

I think going with the final version of the scene in Deadpool and WolverineLevy and team manage to hold on to the thrill of the sequence for a little while longer, and in doing so, the film ends up making their survival both a surprise and a moment of celebration, as the characters return to see a villain lose. As such, Deadpool and WolverineBlake Lively’s ending is made better when Blake Lively puts herself in the fans’ shoes – something those involved with the film did a lot of – to deliver the best experience possible.
