My hero academiaThe main story may be over, but the world it introduced is still around, producing strange and powerful new quirks in the spinoff series Team-up missions. It is a solid sign that fans of the series have a lot to look forward to, even if the great battle between good and evil has come to an end.
My Hero Academia Team-Up Missions is a spinoff series by Yoco Akiyama that follows small groups of students from the main series as they go off on “team-up” missions together. They are often lighthearted and fun, and focus on characters that usually don’t get too much focus in the main series (although there is a lot of focus on fan favorites like Deku and Bakugo). Although it is difficult to calculate exactly when they will take place between the events of the main series, this is really a detail that is not so important to enjoy the series.
One of the new chapters, released in English at the end of August, reveals some strange new quirks that push the boundaries of what quirks can do.
The modern art quirks of My Hero Academia may have been some of the series’ strongest
Two new powerful quirks could have been unstoppable in the wrong hands
In chapter 27 of Team-up missionsPart of the recently released 5th volume of the manga, features a strange modern art-inspired city that is terrorized by a team of villains who believe destruction is the purest form of artistic expression. Deku, Bakugo, and Todoroki have been sent along with Present Mic to help them deal with the villains, but the team is soon in for a shock when the villains use their quirks for the first time. One uses a quirk called “2D-ify,” which turns Bakugo into a 2-dimensional image, while another uses cubism to turn Deku into an abstract version of himself.
These quirks are insanely powerful for two relatively minor villains, who can completely change someone into unnatural forms that leave them completely helpless. There is no indication as to what the quirks’ limitations might be, or if they could target multiple opponents at once. Their ability to change people on a fundamental level seems to indicate that these are (or are very nearly) reality warping-level powers. Fortunately for Deku and Bakugo, the effect wore off once the villains were subdued by Todoroki, suggesting some level of concentration was needed.
My Hero Academia Team-Up Missions is still expanding the series’ world after the end of the main manga
