Every Peacock Original Movie of 2024, Ranked

Peacock It didn’t release as many original films in 2024 as streamers like Netflix or Disney+, but it had an interesting mix of feature films and documentaries for subscribers throughout the year. While the streamer is known for being the home of everything that originally aired on NBC, it’s also the streaming home of new releases from Hallmark and has a huge library of true crime documentaries.

In 2024, Peacock’s original films included a children’s film, a remake of an action classic, and a story inspired by true events. Aside from these three films, all the rest of the feature film content was documentaries. Most of it was definitely worth watching for subscribers.

…most critics agree that the original film is much better.

This particular film is part of the Megamind franchise, and is in a unique position. It’s a sequel to 2010 Megamind film, but it is also the pilot that set up the series Megamind Rules to Peacock. Unfortunately, critics were not impressed with it.

The film shows former villain Megamind taking on the role of protector of the city. When the Doom Syndicate, a group of villains he belonged to, arrives on the scene, he decides to pretend he’s still the bad guy so they don’t end up like his enemies. This doesn’t last long and he ends up fighting them to save the day.

Although there are funny moments in the film, most critics agree that the original film is much better. To some, it seemed like Peacock was simply trying to cash in on an existing property. Creating a children’s show sequel to a film released 14 years earlier, however, seems like money-making overkill.

Pathological: The Lies of Joran Van Der Sloot

Peacock takes another look at the confessed killer

Pathological: The Lies of Joran van der Sloot is a documentary that explores Joran van der Sloot’s story of violence and deceit. Provides rare interviews and new perspectives, examining the cases of Natalee Holloway and Stephany Flores, linked to their actions.

Director

Christopher Cassel

Release date

Cast

Ricardo Flores

Execution time

94 minutes

Many streamers have featured specials or documentaries about the Natalee Holloway murder case. All of these specials were made before van der Sloot admitted to being responsible for her death. This was done after he took admission in 2023.

This documentary is also unique because it doesn’t just focus on Holloway’s case, as many others do. Instead, it focuses on Holloway’s alleged killer, examining how he became the person who could kill her, lie to her family about it, and then extort them for money that he used to travel to Peru and murder another woman. woman.

The documentary, unfortunately, follows the trend of highlighting the killer and not the victim or survivors.and it doesn’t offer much information that true crime enthusiasts or those who really want to help with missing persons cases don’t already know.

A documentary highlighting Stormy Daniels

Cast

Jimmy Kimmel, Stormy Daniels, Rachel Maddow, Demi Delia, Seth Rogen, Michael Avenatti, Donald Trump

Execution time

109 minutes

The average television and film fan probably only knows the name Stormy Daniels because of her name appearing in the news in relation to former President Donald Trump. This documentary is her attempt to let the public see who she really is outside of this scandal.

The documentary follows Daniels on her journey as a mother and advocate, but doesn’t go very far. Much of the documentary is also about her past rather than her present, which critics rightly found strange.

The documentary was also criticized for featuring footage originally filmed for a different documentary that was never finished. The footage was filmed by Denver Nicks, a journalist with whom Daniels had a romantic relationship, which makes it less likely that the film will be an impartial look at the subject.

TikTok Star Murders

A modern true crime story

TikTok Star Murders logo features broken heart and gun emojis on broken phone screens

Peacock is one of the biggest streaming destinations for true crime enthusiasts. The streamer hosts almost every episode of Date lineits spin-offs, several true crime documentaries, and all the latest episodes of every crime docuseries Oxygen has to offer. However, it also has its exclusives, like this documentary.

TikTok Star Murders examines the lives of husband and wife Ali and Ana Abulaban, known for their viral TikTok videos and social media presence. The documentary explores what led Ali to murder his wife and her friend and what was really happening behind the scenes.

On the one hand, the documentary is a huge wake-up call for anyone whose interest in becoming a social media sensation could take a darker turn. On the other hand, the documentary focuses heavily on the couple and almost completely leaves out the second victim of the double homicide – Rayburn Barron. It’s timely and certainly provides a broader story for those who followed the news about Ana Abulaban’s death, but it doesn’t feel complete.

Gary

A look at the life of Gary Coleman

Key art for Peacock original documentary Gary features actor Gary Coleman in the middle of the letters of his first name

… gives an insight into his private life.

Gary Coleman became a sensation as a child thanks to his charm and comedic timing that simply couldn’t be surpassed at a young age. He could hold his own against the more experienced artists. Unfortunately, like many children who grow up in the acting industry, her adult life has been more about the tabloids than her work. This documentary recalls how this happened, but also gives an insight into his private life.

In favor of the documentary are things like never-before-seen footage and new interviews. This allows the audience a new perspective on Coleman that they may not have had before. Some critics, however, were unconvinced by the documentary’s attempt to present the theory that Coleman was murdered when he died in 2010. There was a feeling that, after all the attempts to tell his story, it was yet another attempt to sensationalize the what happened to him.

Inspired by a real prison break

Cast

Aubrey Joseph, Nikki Blonsky, DC Young Fly, Theo Rossi, Thomas Jane, Tyrese Gibson, Vivica A. Fox

Bosco follows a young man who ends up sentenced to 35 years in prison for drug possession. Two years after being convicted, he escapes with the help of a woman he met through a personal ad in hopes of being present for the birth of his first child.

The film’s premise seems too strange to be true, but it is based on real events. The film is inspired by the real events in the life of Quawntay Adams. If the true story isn’t enough to draw audiences in, the cast should be. Aubrey Joseph, who starred in Marvel’s Cloak and Daggeris the prison escapee, while Nikki Blonsky, who starred in the Hairspray musical, it is the woman who helps him. They are equally fantastic in their roles.

Critics’ biggest complaint is that the film’s final act was a little rushed, but that doesn’t take away from these performances.

Bray Wyatt: Becoming Immortal

A look at a fighter’s legacy

Bray Wyatt standing at a table in the Peacock original documentary about his life

It’s a love letter to an athlete and a sport that is very specific.

Sports enthusiasts often connect with a team or athlete because the crowd at a live event makes them feel part of something bigger than themselves. This is especially true in wrestling, which has a more theatrical element than most sports. Characters are created and stories told in the ring as fans watch.

Bray Wyatt came from a wrestling family, and although he explored other career paths, he returned to wrestling shortly before an illness took his life. This documentary explores the lasting impact he has on the sport and its fans.

While the documentary itself may not be surprising, will likely provide some nostalgia and much-needed closure for fans who have followed his career. It’s a love letter to an athlete and a sport that is very specific.

The Assassin

A remake of John Woo

In Woo’s reinvention of his own classic, Zee, aka Queen of the Dead, is a hired assassin who is hunted by her former colleagues and the police after failing to carry out the murder of a young girl.

Release date

August 23, 2024

Writers

Josh Campbell, Brian Helgeland, Matt Stuecken

Cast

Nathalie Emmanuel, Sam Worthington, Omar Sy, Diana Silvers, Saïd Taghmaoui, Hugo Diego Garcia, Aurélia Agel, Grégory Montel

It’s rare for directors to remake their own films, but John Woo does just that with The Assassin. The 2024 Peacock original film is a remake of its 1989 Hong Kong action film. Moves the action from Hong Kong to Paris. A remake had been in development since 1992.

Here, Nathalie Emmanuel stars as an assassin living in Paris. She has mainly been employed by a man who works for a crime boss. When hired for a job that involves killing a group at a nightclub, a singer ends up in the crossfire and she decides to let the singer, blinded by the event, live. This act of mercy, however, leads her to realize that her cushy job may be under attack, as someone is preparing to attack the man she works for from the inside.

The action scenes are great and The Assassin is simply another sign that Nathalie Emmanuel needs to be given more leading roles instead of being relegated to sidekick or love interest in so many action films.

Queer Planet

Documenting sexuality in the animal kingdom

A pair of flamingos whose heads and necks form a heart in key art from the documentary Queer Planet

There are a lot of nature documentaries out there. Very few of them, however, are marked as something to be released during Pride Month. Peacock did this with Queer Planetproviding a new perspective for many on the animal kingdom.

The documentary examines the reality of sexuality in the animal kingdom. From lesbian primates to lion bromances and more, the documentary strives to show that there is nothing unnatural about being queer. It showcases several different groups of animals that engage in same-sex relationships, co-parent children, and more.

The documentary is not only informative for those interested in sexuality, nature, or both, but it is also beautifully filmed. Part of the appeal of nature documentaries is how close up they can provide to the beautiful animals that people can’t get close to themselves. Queer Planet does it masterfully and is the best of Peacock original films and documentaries in 2024.
