Chris Pine’s Directorial Debut Film Becomes a Streaming Hit Despite Dismal 22% RT Score

Chris PinhoThe directorial debut film, in which he also stars, became a streaming hit despite its dismal 22% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Pine is perhaps best known for his roles in the franchise, starting with Captain Kirk in Star Trek reboot films, which include 2009 Star Trek2013 Star Trek in the Darkand 2016 Star Trek Beyond. From there, he also starred as Steve Trevor in the 2017 DCEU films Wonder Woman and its 2020 sequel, Wonder Woman 1984.

Outside of the franchise, Pine first rose to prominence for his roles in romantic comedies, including The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement in 2004 and Just my luck in 2006. From there, he was cast in Star Trekbut continued to appear in potential franchises, playing Cinderella’s Prince in the Disney film In the forest and Jack Ryan in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. In recent years, with Star Trek 4 taking forever and the DCEU being rebooted, Pine starred Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and branched out with his directorial debut.

Chris Pine’s directorial debut, Poolbecame a streaming hit. Directed by and starring Pine, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Ian Golter, The film follows an unwavering optimist and Los Angeles native who dedicates his days to pool maintenance in a Tahitian Tiki apartment complex while striving to improve the quality of life in his beloved hometown. Chris Pine leads the Pool cast alongside Annette Bening, DeWanda Wise, Stephen Tobolowsky, Clancy Brown, John Ortiz, Ray Wise, Juliet Mills, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Danny DeVito.

Now, Chris Pine’s directorial debut has become a streaming hit on Hulu, despite its dismal 22% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Pool occupies ninth place ReelgoodTop 10 movies on all streaming platforms for the week of November 7th to 13th. The only film ranked higher was Gladiatorand fell below My old ass, The substance, Trap, Deadpool and Wolverine, Woman of the Hour, Don’t move, Time cutand Apocalypse Z: the beginning of the end. Should he continue starring?

Pool is a streaming hit despite its dismal 22% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics, along with an even lower 20% score from audiences. While Pool Reviews praise Pine’s directorial debut for its deep appreciation of classic Los Angeles-set neo-noir comedies, criticize his own contributions to the genre, and suggest it would have been better not to have been made. Pool is a streaming success because of Chris Pine, the staralthough he is disappointed Chris Pinho the co-writer and director, questioning whether the film could have been better in the hands of a more experienced filmmaker.
