A television adaptation of Cape Fear is officially in development, with Steven Spielberg producing and Martin Scorsese and Javier Bardem in the lead. 1991 by Scorsese Cape Fear was a remake of the 1962 film of the same name, based on the novel The executioners by John D. MacDonald. It tells the story of a convicted sex offender who uses his new knowledge of the law and its many loopholes to seek revenge on the public defender he blames for his arrest. It was a critical and box office success, also receiving Oscar nominations for stars Robert De Niro and Juliette Lewis.
Variety confirms that Apple TV+ is officially moving forward with a television adaptation of Cape Fearwith Bardem in the lead, in addition to production by Scorsese and Spielberg. The log line is below:
“A storm is brewing for happily married lawyers Amanda and Steve Bowden when Max Cady (Bardem), a notorious killer from their past, is released from prison.”
