Near the end of Dragon Age: The Veil GuardPlayers will begin to maximize their titles with the game’s various companions. This means new abilities, new story scenes, and a new status as a Hero of the Veil Guard. This is a unique status that companions achieve only when their relationship with Rook has progressed as far as it can, whether romantic or not. There will be no more camp conversations or side quests to complete – that storyline is effectively over.
Becoming a Veil Guard Hero means that the companion has overcome their personal problems and is ready to fully commit to the main mission. More importantly, however, this means a new foundational ability that solidifies the character build and a new set of legendary armor. Depending on how you’ve developed your companions throughout the game, there could be a clear winner. But in most cases, one skill is objectively better than the other.

Make Harding a DPS
Titan’s Heart
Harding’s Veil Guard Hero choice comes down to how she will choose to honor the Titans’ legacy: should she choose to honor the Titans’ rage or embrace her own identity? Selecting “Remember the rage of the Titans” grants her the Stone’s Revenge. Occasionally causes her to fire Titan Stones instead of arrows, which deals 20% extra damage. and apply Bleed to enemies. Additionally, she receives a legendary armor called Titan’s Revenge, which causes status effect Detonations to apply Bleed and deal 25% extra damage against those suffering from it.
If Rook chooses”Remember who you are,” Harding gains a defensive ability, Heart of the Titan, which speeds up the casting of the Calming Potion and increases the damage the rest of her party deals when she casts it. Her legendary armor here, the Inquisition Spotter, causes detonation to disrupt enemies .Harding is a decent healer, but not the best, then. from a practical standpoint, you might want to give her The Stone’s Vengeance. However, if you plan on relying on Harding’s healing abilities in the final battles, Heart of the Titan is probably the best option.

If the player chooses “You bring hope to Dock Town,” this Neve ability is significantly increased with Cold Justicewhich increases the maximum number of times Chilled can stack, increases its effectiveness, and increases the duration of Frozen. His armor, Investigator’s Robes, causes his detonations to reduce the enemy’s resistance to cold – down to zero, at which point they are immediately frozen.
If they choose”You protect Dock Town“Snow instead takes on Winter’s Wrath, which increases her critical damage and her damage against enemies with low HP. Her armor, Threader’s Plates, gives her Sundered status effect greater power, but each enemy can only be detonated once as a consequence. You’d much better tell Neve that she gives Dock Town hopeas this ability has no downsides and represents a huge power boost to your most unique ability. His first Veilguard Hero ability option, Lingering Strike, increases this ability, though perhaps not in the most useful way. Her armor, Reborn Leathers, causes Detonation to shock nearby enemies with 200 additional electrical damage. These two perks work in perfect harmony, making Chain Lightning by far the best choice. Refilling shouldn’t need any additional polishing at this point; Instead, take this opportunity to boost Bellara’s offensive abilities, turning her into a powerful DPS with excellent crowd control in the game’s final chapters.

Lucanis should take revenge

As for Lucanis, his abilities as Hero of the Veilguard revolve around his final decision regarding Illario’s fate. Choosing “Your actions are unforgivable“ immensely increases Lucanis’ critical and detonation damageand also increases your damage against enemies with status effects applied, in the Demon of Defiance ability. This goes hand in hand with Raven’s Tenacity, his legendary armor, which causes detonations on downed enemies to stagger anyone caught in the blast. This Stagger’s potency increases based on the number of enemies it affects.
If you say to Lucanis: “Do you still care, show mercy,” your defenses will increase with the Demon of Rebellion perk. This increases your resistance by 10%, while also causing everyone to deal 25% extra damage against Barriers. The Raven’s Balance armor causes the detonation of a Oppressed enemy can detonate another, and anyone near the second detonation will be weak to Lucanis’ necrotic magic from abilities alone. It’s better to call Illario’s actions unforgivable and grant Lucanis the powerful Demon of Defiance damage ability. The defensive boost is weak in comparison and not as useful as the damage buff.

Davrin should be a battle master

Predictably, most of Davrin’s abilities revolve around Assan, his griffon companion. Towards the end of the game, Rook will decide the ultimate fate of his griffins – should they become sentinels of the wild and remain in Arlathan Forest, or return to help the Gray Wardens? Choosing the first option causes Assan’s skills to deal 25% extra damage and grant Accuracy in the Battlemaster skill. The associated armor, Wildwood Benefactor, causes detonations on Staggered enemies to inflict Stagger on all those caught in the explosion. The resulting Stagger also increases by 10% for each enemy affected.
Sending the griffins back to the Gray Wardens grants Defender, which simply reduces the cooldown of Assan’s abilities and causes them to grant the player Deflection. The armor, Gray Benefactor, converts detonation damage into fire damage, and the more burn stacks on a detonated target, the more damage it will deal. Unfortunately, none of Davrin’s Veilguard Hero abilities align particularly well with the perks provided by his armor. However, I went with Battlemaster to increase Assan’s damageand because I was worried about Defender’s fire damage against enemy resistances. I don’t regret that choice.

Taash should embrace Rivaini culture

As for Taash, their decision comes down to two different worlds: Qunari heritage or Rivaini education. Choosing to ask Taash”What did she want for you?” causes them to embrace Rivaini culture, gaining the Rivaini Flair ability. This increases critical damage by 50%and its damage against enemies with high HP by 25%, guaranteeing some strong hits right off the bat. When they inflict Burn, it deals 50% extra damage when it first hits, and this damage increase decreases by 10% for each additional enemy caught in the blast.
This goes hand in hand with Rivain’s Legacy armor, which causes detonations to inflict Burns and deal 150% extra fire damage if an enemy caught in the blast is already Burned. Compared with choosing “Who was she?” and granting Taash the Qunari Focus ability, Rivaini Flair is clearly the best option. This represents a significant increase in Taash’s already massive damage output, where Qunari Focus just gives them a flat increase in weapon damage with a reduction in cooldown. Does not work as well with The Qun’s Honor armor, which causes a chain of detonation on weakened enemies.

Emmrich should become a Lich

Finally when Emmrich has the opportunity to bring Manfred back or become a Lich you must choose to let him become a Lich for the Death’s Caress skill. This causes all of Emmrich’s abilities to inflict the Necrosis status effect, while also increasing everyone else’s Affliction damage by 25%. This means more damage over time and a near-constant opportunity to detonate Necrosis for extra damage. This pairs well with the Lich’s Vestige armor, which causes the detonation of a Sundered enemy to apply the Quietus status effect, and if they already have Necrosis they will take an additional 200 damage.
His other potential Veilguard Hero ability, Embrace of Life, is practically useless, simply increasing his Low Health cap by 10% – in other words, any abilities that activate when Emmrich is at Low Health will now activate sooner . The party deals more damage while he is in this state, but this pales in comparison to Necrosis’ potential. The associated armor, Graven Vestments, increases detonation damage at low health and gives Emmrich the Invulnerable status – a good defensive option, but far from the best build you can get.
