The creator of Home responds to the theory that Dr. Wilson was hallucinating throughout the show. THE Home The series finale, which aired in May 2012, ended with Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) revealing to Dr. Succumbs to cancer. However, a popular fan theory suggests that House actually died in the fire at the beginning of the episodeand that the final moments were all Wilson’s fantasy.
Talking to Weekly entertainment for the 20th anniversary of Home In the premiere, series creator David Shore answered several lingering questions about the medical drama, including the theory that Wilson had hallucinations at the end. He recognized that viewers present different interpretations of the story than the creator intended. But although he admitted that a Wilson hallucination would not be “inconsistent with anything”, Shore said that It wasn’t an interpretation he had in mind.:
Look, you put on a show, you put it out there, and people have the right to enjoy it however they want and interpret it however they want. There are certain things I wanted to say about the show, and I would hate for people to interpret it in a way that was completely contrary to what I intended. Enjoy it however you want, have fun with it. I think one of the most wonderful things about it is that people took it seriously and it lives on for them.
But that was an interpretation I didn’t have in mind, but it’s not inconsistent with anything. We wanted that kind of happy ending. The show has never been about simple happy endings, but rather about finding moments here and there. I used two songs at the end and they both had opposing messages as he left, and I think that says a lot about what we were trying to do with the show.
It’s still a complicated ending
One of the songs Shore mentions in response to the theory is “Enjoy Yourself (It’s Later Than You Think)”. A breezy tune, heard as Wilson and House ride away on motorcycles, the song encourages listeners to make the most of the time they have while they’re still alive. The lively farewell scene seems to mitigate the dark hallucination theory. But, as Shore says, it is not explicitly refuted by the ending.
If the viewer chooses, it could be that Wilson has fully embraced his illusion and is blissfully lost in it. But from the show’s perspective, there seems to be a bigger point at stake in terms of the kind of person House is and the ending he deserves. This is a driving force in the medical drama. At least on some level, the show seems to be saying that Gregory enjoying what he has with Wilson before Wilson dies of terminal cancer is happiness enough.
Our opinion on Wilson’s hallucination theory
The ending is quite sad
It’s a cool theory. But as it stands, the ending isn’t exactly uplifting for the Home cast of characters. Wilson will die within months, even if viewers don’t get to witness the sad change. There’s probably more to the idea of a person enjoying their brief time and prioritizing what matters, rather than some hidden story about a dying man’s delusions.
