Kevin Smith Clarifies New Comments on Surprise Sequel to Fan-Favorite 1999 Comedy

Director Kevin Smith clarifies new comments about an unexpected sequel to his $43 million hit comedy classic from 1999. Smith rose to prominence as a wunderkind director who wrote, directed, produced and edited his debut film. Clerksbased on the everyday lives of New Jersey store clerks. Shot for $27,575 at the convenience and video stores where Smith worked in real life, the film was purchased by Miramax, which spent an additional $230,000 on editing and music licensing. In later years, Smith’s filmography moved from comedy to films containing darker elements such as thriller and horror, including Red State and Preybefore revisiting previous films to produce sequels, such as Jay and Silent Bob reboot. And there’s a belief that another of Smith’s beloved ’90s comedies could be getting a sequel.

Launched in 1999, Dogma was one of Smith’s most popular and successful films, grossing $44 million against a $10 million budget and featuring an all-star cast including Matt Damon, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Linda Fiorentino, Salma Hayek, Jason Lee and feature film. The film has developed a cult following over the years, which has been further fueled by the fact that the film is not available to stream anywhere, and Smith’s recent decision to revisit previous works and produce sequels has led many to hope that a Dogma sequelae may occur.

By X, Smith Tweets to clarify a report in Deadline which states that Smith confirmed that Dogma 2 it’s happening with Affleck and Damon. The director states that while he plans the sequel and starts writing the script from memory, nothing is confirmed with the project at this stage. He also confirms that despite wanting his characters – Bartleby and Loki – to return, he has not yet spoken to Affleck or Damon. Check out the 54-year-old’s tweet below:

Smith’s fondness for revisiting his older films and developing sequels means a Dogma follow-up is likely. The director apparently had his experimental phase and now seems to be returning to more familiar projects, which is one of the reasons why I could see Dogma 2 happening in the coming years.

However, Smith has already attempted to make a sequel to Matratsboth as a film and as a show, which was never greenlit. Much will depend on the availability of Affleck and Damon, whose involvement would all but confirm the green light, but they’re bigger stars now with busier schedules, so Smith You may need to draw on your unique friendship with the peer to ensure your involvement in a Dogma sequence.
