How To Save Duke Ravengard And Wyll’s Soul In Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 is full of tough choices, and one concerning Wyll Ravengard in act three is particularly troubling. The warlock’s patron, Mizora, shows up to offer him an ultimatum: he can have the freedom he desires from their pact, but in exchange, his captured father will surely die. Alternatively, Mizora will help Wyll save his father, but he must give up his soul to her forever.

It’s an awful position to put Wyll in, as someone who dreads his attachment to the devil yet cares more for his father than himself. Wyll struggles with the choice, and in the end, it is up to the player to encourage him one way or another. However, many players may not know that there is a way to get the best of both worlds in this situation, saving both Wyll’s soul and the life of Duke Ravengard. However, it requires some specific choices and efficient gameplay to pull off.

Choose Wyll’s Freedom When Mizora Offers It

Helping Wyll Escape His Patron’s Pact

As selfish as it may feel at the time, the right choice is to take Wyll’s freedom when Mizora offers it. This will free the Blade of Frontiers from his sadistic patron and offer him a new lease on life, yet it will simultaneously sacrifice the person he loves most. It’s a choice that is somewhat out of character for Wyll, and even Mizora expresses surprise that he would do so.

But it’s important to note that Duke Ravengard does not die the instant Wyll makes this choice. After all, Mizora is not the one who has captured him; that would be Gortashwho has Ravengard locked in a cell in his underwater prison called the Iron Throne. Mizora will not offer any help to save him at this point, but it’s still possible for players to discover the prison and save Ravengard independently of the devil. After choosing Wyll’s freedom, players will need to seek out Gortash’s secret jail.

Talk Florrick Down During Her Confrontation

Limit The Collateral Damage Mizora Will Try to Inflict

But first, players will likely encounter another problem: Counselor Florrick, who has been tricked into thinking that Wyll killed his father. This will only be a problem if Florrick is still alive at this point and has been freed from Wyrm’s Rock, but assuming that is the case, she will confront the party in the lower city to get justice for the Duke. Players must convince her that Mizora was lyingotherwise they may end up having to kill the Counselor as a result of the devil’s scheme.

After that, it’s time to find the Iron Throne. The easiest way to do this is to start the quest”Avenge the Drowned” at the temple of Umberlee, which involves searching for a submarine that struck and killed a Waveservant. Following this quest will lead players to Flymm Cargo, which contains a secret passage to an underwater harbor that is home to Cap, the submarine used to reach the Iron Throne.

Some players may note that Flymm is the last name of Gortash’s parents, a clue that he owns this particular warehouse on the city’s coast.

From there, players will need to convince Redhammer in BG3 to take them to prison. Gortash will call in to threaten to destroy the place, but players must forge on and enter a time-sensitive quest to free the Throne’s occupants. Among them are the Gondian gnomes, the mind flayer Omeluum, and Duke Ulder Ravengard.

Move Quickly Through The Iron Throne

Time And Teleportation Are Key

Players have a limited number of turns to free people from the Iron Throne, get them on board Cap, and escape themselves to avoid meeting a watery death. To avoid running out of time and to get as many people out as possible, a number of items and spells are key. Having someone cast longstrider

on the whole party beforehand is a smart idea, as is casting stem

, Misty steps

and dimension door

inside the Throne. Things like the Boots of Speed and the Haste Helm can also be a big help.

The number of turns players get to escape depends on their difficulty mode, but the number is between 5 and 8. As such, activating short-term buffs like potions of speed and expeditious retreat can be quite effective.

Given how many prisoners there are, players looking to save them all should bring along some expendable summons to fight the Sahuagin guards while the player characters use their actions to dash. Ravengard himself is in the middle cell on the right side of the map, so to save him, beeline that way immediately. There’s a lever to open his cell, and players can control him once he’s out, but he’s not out of the woods yet. Because Mizora will show up to honor her end of the bargain, and summon exploding spiders to kill the Duke.

This is where the dimension door spell can come in particularly handy in Baldur’s Gate 3. Ravengard gets incapacitated by a command

spell, so another character will need to teleport him with them to safety. From there, it’s as simple as blowing up the spiders and getting the Duke into the submarine. He’ll show up at the player’s camp later to speak to Wyll, much to Mizora’s chagrin. Players should take the chance to gloat; they have now beaten a devil at their own game.
