The Babadook director teases next horror project from horror author: ‘It’s not Stephen King’

The Babadook Director Jennifer Kent has teased her next project, confirming it comes from a horror author who isn’t Stephen King. Released in 2014, The Babadook was highly praised for its use of a terrifying creature to represent the depression that can be brought on by grief. After the film was released, Kent wrote and directed 2018’s The Nightingaleand later wrote and directed the episode “The Murmuring” for Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. The exact nature of her next project, however, remains up in the air.

Talk to Screen Rantbut, Kent confirmed that her next project will be adapted from a horror authorTeasing the author is not king despite her love for his work. She did, however, praise the author whose book she will adapt, saying an announcement is likely to be made in the coming weeks after a deal is finalized. She hopes to go into production with the film in 2025. Check out what Kent had to say below:

I can tell you that I am teaming up with a very famous horror writer/author to try to make one of his books. And it’s not Stephen King. [Chuckles] So, that’s all I can say at this point. We’re hoping to release information on that in a couple of weeks, we’re in the middle of the deal, but if it goes forward, I’m super excited about next year. I love Stephen King, of course, nothing against him, but it’s not him.

What Kent’s next project means for her filmmaking career

She continues to write and direct horror stories

Kent has two other projects in the works so far, including an original script titled grace and an adaptation of the novel by Alexis Cole Alice + Frida ForeverAbout the real-life murderer Alice Mitchell. In 2014, she was also approached by HBO, which was trying to bring her to an unknown TV series. Although it remains unclear if her new horror project will be on the small or big screen, Her work with a famous horror author indicates her priorities are in the realm of terrorDespite the other projects she was involved with.
