The ObserverThe popularity and ambiguous ending left audiences hoping for a second season. Ryan Murphy’s true crime thriller is loosely based on the story of 657 Boulevard and tells the story of the Brannocks (fictionalized versions of the Broaddus family) whose move to a seemingly idyllic suburban home proves disastrous. When the family receives threatening letters from an anonymous “Vigilante,” they hire a private detective to help solve the case. The identity of the observer is never revealed, and the series ends ominously for both the Brannocks and the new residents of 657 Boulevard.

Like many Ryan Murphy TV shows, The Observer proved to be a hit with audiences, even if critics were less than pleased with the thriller (via Rotten tomatoes). Some were dissatisfied with the creative liberties taken with the real story, while others found it lackluster compared to the large number of contemporary series telling similar stories. However, The Observer hit a nerve in its first season and even received the green light to return for a second game. Despite this, news has been scarce.

Despite the fact that the show was greenlit for another season over two years ago, the latest news comes as an uncertain update from Naomi Watts (via Weekly entertainment). The star led The Observer 1st season, but It’s clear she was kept out of the season sequence– if anything actually happened. Watts said in September 2024 that “I don’t have one [update]if there is. I wish I could. It was so fun, right? I don’t have an update, unfortunately.

Ryan Murphy is no stranger to expanding his so-called miniseries, and could this be it The Observer season two will leave the Braddock family behind in a new suburban chase story. Murphy’s Strife and Monster all the series changed subject matter from season to season and found new life by exploring new stories. Watts could be left out because the series has no plans to bring her back.

Netflix found huge success with TV maven Ryan Murphy, and it was no surprise when The Observer was greenlit for a second season, despite being billed as a miniseries. The announcement came in conjunction with the renewal of Murphy’s most controversial true crime series. Monster which was billed as an anthology. Despite the rapid renovation, almost nothing has been revealed about The Observerwhile Monster continued to develop with a third season already on the way.

Will anyone return?

The Observer Season 1 featured a well-known and talented cast, who could return if Season 2 continued the same story. In addition to Theodora Birch, from Dumzweni, who dies of cancer in The Observer end of season 1, every main character survives season 1 and may return for the show’s renewal. However, Naomi Watt’s update on the series may suggest that The Observer it’s also becoming an anthology that would require an entirely new cast, something Ryan Murphy’s shows are well known for.

So far, it is not clear whether The Observer will season 2 pick up where season 1 left off or take the story in an entirely new direction. Considering Naomi Watt’s comments about Season 2, the former is becoming less and less likely as time goes on. Additionally, the true criminal nature of the story limits how far season two can take things, as the finale of The Observer it was also the end of the real-life story, and everything else would be fiction. The Observer the second season could become an anthology that explores other cases of suburban horror.
