All Three Game Makers in The Hunger Games (and What Happened to Them)

All three Head Gamesmakers from The Hunger Games franchise has fascinating stories, from how they came to power to what happened to them after each installment. The franchise is widely known for its brutality, both inside the arena during each year’s Games as well as outside it at the height of the Rebellion. Although this brutality is seen primarily through the eyes of The Hunger Games’ Victors, the franchise’s Gamesmakers, are the orchestrators of many of these atrocities, making their roles both vital and terrifying.

The Gamesmakers are primarily secondary antagonists in the series, such as the main antagonist of The Hunger Games is their boss, President Coriolanus Snow. Formed by a group of scientists from the Capital, its purpose was to design and manage the Games under the direction of the Head Gamesmaker, whose very life could depend on its performance. While the three named Head Gamesmakers haven’t received much focus in the Hunger Games films, his influence and decisions helped shape the narrativewith each leading to their own rise and fall and that of the Capital.

Dr. Volumnia Gália

Head Gamesmaker of the 10th Annual Hunger Games

Volumnia Gaul (Viola Davis) served as Head Gamesmaker for the first ten games, with his actions contributed to Snow’s rise to power in The Hunger Games. Dr. Gaul served as an instructor at Capital University and, using an assignment for her students, indirectly caused the Hunger Games to be conceived and approved by Capital.

During the 10th Hunger Games, she oversaw the mentoring program, allowing her to guide Snow’s actions. She later helped him during his time as a Peacekeeper in District 12, solidifying their bond. Dr. Gaul was well known for the mutant creatures she created for the Gameslike the neon mutt snakes she made and placed in the tributes in The ballad of songbirds and snakes.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Birds and Snakes is a prequel film that takes place 64 years before the events of the original film featuring Katniss Everdeen. The film centers on young Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) and charts his rise to power as leader of Panem. Taking place during the 10th Hunger Games, Snow is tasked with mentoring District 12 tribute Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler).

Although Dr. Gaul’s fate is unknown, she likely passed away before the events of the main series, as she was already an elderly woman in the prequel and her connection to President Snow could have made her a risk. Even so, her influence on President Snow could be felt, especially as she helped him find his signature weapon that he would use to ascend. The Hunger Games: toxic.

Seneca Crane

Head Gamesmaker of the 72nd, 73rd and 74th Annual Hunger Games

Seneca Crane (Wes Bently), despite his loyalty to President Snow and desire to perform well, ended up creating the Rebellion’s powerful figurehead in The Hunger Games films. The role of the crane in The Hunger Games books was minimalas he was never mentioned by name, although his influence on the Games was clearly felt in later books.

Crane’s favoritism and ability to be easily influenced by Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) led to many disagreements between him and President Snow.

However, His role was expanded in the filmsappearing in several interviews and acting indifferent during the demonstration, leading to Katniss Everdeen’s (Jennifer Lawrence) highest score, as her angry reaction impressed him. Crane’s favoritism and ability to be easily influenced by Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) led to many disagreements between him and President Snow.

Crane was still cruel during the Games, causing a forest fire that directed Katniss to the Careers and released the wolf mutts at the end of The Hunger Games‘first film. However, his cruelty was replaced by his desire for a good showletting Katniss and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) live after threatening to poison themselves with nightlock berries. This led to Seneca’s death from nighttime poisoning, showing how no one was safe under President Snow’s reign.

Plutarch Heavensbee

Head Gamesmaker for the 75th Annual Hunger Games/Quarter Quell

Plutarch Heavensbee’s (Philip Seymour Hoffman) tenure as Head Gamesmaker was cut short because he was secretly working with the Rebellion, leading to him being the last Head Gamesmaker of The Hunger Games franchise. Heavensbee took over shortly after Crane’s deathmeeting Katniss on her and Peeta’s Victory Tour. Heavensbee initially showed no outward favoritism towards the tributes.

Later, however, he revealed his true loyalty to the rebellion after he rescued Katniss and her allies from the arena, bringing down the Capitol’s force field and making the 75th Hunger Games a no-win event. After Katniss accepted her role as Mockingjay, Heavensbee helped guide the movement’s propaganda.

The second entry in the Hunger Games film franchise and based on Suzanne Collins’ book of the same name, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, picks up shortly after the events of the first film. Returning home to District 12 after victory in the 74th Annual Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) begin to sense an impending rebellion against the oppressive Capitol.

However, his order to film more propaganda in the Capitol may have been part of the bombing that killed several Capitol children and rebel healers, including Prim (Willow Shields). Katniss didn’t get revenge on him, as she helped stop Effie Trinket’s (Elizabeth Banks) execution and helped defend Katniss during her trial for President Coin’s (Julianne Moore) murder. Later, he became Secretary of Communications, giving him the only happy ending for a Gamesmaker in The Hunger Games franchise.
