Random Fallout 4 encounters can provide solid armor in early game and may have even deeper connections to the story

An unexplained Fallout 4 Guess fans have been puzzling since the initial release of the game. It may have some fascinating connections to the series’ lore, but even if it doesn’t, it’s at least a solid source of reliable armor in the early game. Random encounters have always been a central part of these Fallout experience; In fact, they made up the vast majority of the combat scenarios of the first two games. Later games in the series turned away from a reliance on random encounters, turning instead to handcrafted enemy hideouts, but never abandoning unprovoked ambushes as a way to raise the stakes.

These chance encounters continued Fallout 4In which players will occasionally encounter enemies of every type (bands of super mutants, raider scavenging parties, legendary deathclaws, etc) as they roam the wasteland of the Commonwealth. These are typically generic and unmemorable, except in at least one case. This particular randomly encountered enemy is unique – not just named, but gifted with an evocative nom de guerre Which can refer to any number of classic works of literature. And once again, he’s got some big booty to boot. But Who really is the mysterious AbsalomAnd why should players seek him out?

Absalom can be encountered in a variety of different areas throughout Fallout 4Including a couple of places in the For Harbour DLC. He belongs to no clear faction, and travels alone, always outfitted in heavy armor and wielding a sniper rifle. This is a good enough reason to seek him out: Once the player kills AbsalomThey will be treated to a full set of combat armorAlthough exactly what type depends on the level at which they face him. Although the armor will be less effective at lower player levels, It is best to meet Absalom early For two reasons. For one, even low-level Combat Armor can make a massive difference in the early game, but it’s expensive to obtain through other means. If the Sole Survivors encounter Absalom later in the game, they will likely have found several pieces of combat armor on their own, or at least have saved enough caps to purchase some. Absalom also scales with the player’s level, potentially making him too difficult if encountered later.

Absalom spawns around well-populated spaces, so most players will encounter him organically. For those who want to seek him out in the early game, however, Checking near some of the game’s biggest landmarks will often cause Absalom to spawn. He will often appear on the outskirts of Diamond City, in the Dartmouth Professional Building, in the Hyde Park church, or near Fort Hagen. Players can also cheat to find him by using the console commands 0014CE9F.moveto player to spawn him instantly, or player.moveto 0014CE9F to teleport directly to him.

Some players have theorized that Absalom is a reference to Sam Warrick, a similar character from Fallout 3. Much like Absalom, Sam randomly wanders over Fallout 3s world, and attacks the player senselessly, wordlessly, and mercilessly. He also uses a sniper rifle and drops a suit of leather armor – not quite as impenetrable as Absalom’s Combat Armor, but still handy for low-level players. Also like Absalom, Sam is named, which is somewhat unusual for random raider encounters, and doesn’t seem to belong to any faction or have any kind of motive.

Sam, however, comes with a little more context than Absalom. He is known to be a rival of fellow Lone Wanderer Laszlo Radford, and is not attacking the player character completely randomly. Fallout 3 Official Game GuideHe’s trying to find a bounty so he can save enough to visit Evergreen Mills. Nothing of the sort appears, however, around Absalom, who simply attacks the player, dies, and is not heard from again.

Absalom’s relative simplicity may mean that he is just a complex recall to Sam Warrick, but if this is indeed the case, there is nothing to say. Internal references in the Fallout Series tend to be pretty heavily signaled – consider the appearance of two-bears-high-fiving in New VegasHonest hearts DLC, a reference to one of the Rorschach tests that players take at the start of the game. If Absalom was indeed intended to be Sam Varrick’s successor, that would be abundantly clear.

A Fallout 4 fan theory suggests that Absalom is a player character

“This has never happened before”

one player, Requiem 191 On Reddit, present a compelling theory. in their imagination, Absalom is actually a sardonic take on these Fallout 4 Player character. He is needlessly violent, and doesn’t ask questions before he starts attacking, much like a trigger-happy player. The crux of the theory is the last words of Absalom. He doesn’t have the typical enemy voice lines – when he dies, Absalom silently wonders, “That’s never happened before.

In the theory of Requiem191, Absalom is a mercy player who goes through Fallout 4 on easy modeAttack every innocent NPC they see. This is why they express surprise when the Sole Survivor (the actual player character) is able to get one on them – they have been coasting their way through the game so far with their high loot, killing without conscience or consequence. Requiem191 also compares Absalom’s confidence to that of a high-level player in an online game, not unlike a Fallout 76 Graves who simply go around killing every PC they can find.

The intonation of Absalom’s last line only supports this theory. Voice actor Brandon Kenner reads it with a calm, even timbre. Absalom doesn’t look sad, angry, or even mildly upset At his own death. it is a “Minor return“At most, as if he was simply going to reload his last save and try again.

Samuel & Faulkner

The choice of the name Absalom was a point, and could further indicate the reasons for the character’s conclusion. Absalom” Originates from the Hebrew Bible – specifically from SamuelA series of books that describe the history of Israel. Absalom is portrayed as the third son of King David, a handsome, long-suffering warrior, beloved by all. But Absalom is also subject to violent tendencies, whether he took revenge on his sister, or whether he started a rebellion to return his own father. Absalom was eventually killed in a counterattack by David’s army, to his father’s complaint, as he told his soldiers not to harm Absalom.

Although there is little connection between the story of Absalom in the Bible and that of Absalom in Fallout 4 (which is really not a big deal to begin with), it is worth noting The visual description, at least, lines up. When Absalom’s helmet is removed, he does indeed have the long, flowing hair of his biblical name.

Bethesda games are no strangers to literary references, but whether Absalom’s inclusion has any real meaning, or was simply chosen because it sounded cool, is hard to say with any certainty.

Perhaps it was once before Absalom as a character, but Some of the details may be cut in the final version of the game. This is the most likely explanation for a name and meeting with such gravitas belonging to such a nothing character. Unfortunately, this means that Absalom will always remain a bit of a Fallout 4 Mystery.
