Yellowstone Season 1, Episode 4, “Long Black Train” slows down the episode’s plot momentum as character relationships build in anticipation of what will happen next in the season. In the previous episode, Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) and John Dutton (Kevin Costner) finally come face to face and John realizes that Rainwater will prove to be a formidable opponent. Beth (Kelly Reilly) is told that John will support her run for the state legislature instead of her brother Jamie (Wes Bentley), and she has a chance meeting with Dan Jenkins (Danny Huston). Casey (Luke Grimes) saves a young girl while killing a man and getting his hands even dirtier. John battles health complications while spending the day with Tate
John’s colon cancer is causing him pain.
At the beginning of the episode, John tries to ride a horse, but begins to experience stomach pains. It is then revealed that not only does John have colon cancer, but he recently had two feet of his colon removed. Despite his pain and growing illness, John is still wondering whether he should continue working as a commissioner. The day brightens a little when Casey arrives at the ranch with Tate (Brekken Merrill) and asks his father to take care of Tate for the afternoon. John is excited to spend time with his grandson and takes him on a hike.

When John and Tate reach the stream, they dismount from their horses and begin to build a fire. John begins to exhibit his usual parenting style, telling Tate to do everything and encouraging him to be a man without asking for help. After Tate goes to a stream to collect rocks, he falls into the water and loses consciousness. John dives in to save him and returns an injured but smiling Tate to Casey. However, John’s son does not even look at him, once again disappointed in his father. showing how precarious the relationship between them is.
Jimmy struggles to fit in at Yellowstone Ranch
Rip and John send the ranch hand to the train station
Jimmy Herstrom (Jefferson White) is the new rancher at Yellowstone, and he’s struggling to fit in among the seasoned workers, even if he does have the Yellowstone brand on his chest. While searching for a herd of cattle lost in the woods, the helicopter spooks Jimmy’s horse and he is thrown off it, leaving him beaten, dirty and now convinced that he is not cut out for the job. While pondering his place on the ranch, he finds a forgotten calf stuck in the roots and bushes around a tree.
Alone, Jimmy manages to tie the calf to the saddle and return it to the ranch, even smiling as he does so. His happiness doesn’t last long as another big ranch hand named Fred (Luke Peckinpah) decides he doesn’t appreciate Jimmy’s good humor and picks a fight with him. Fred easily knocks Jimmy into the mud, but he is saved by Rip (Cole Hauser), who throws Fred to the ground and warns him to never touch the man with the Yellowstone brand again.
However, Fred doesn’t have the option because after John suggests they fire him, Rip goes one step further and says that instead of the bus station, maybe Fred should be taken to the train station. This is the first mention of the ominous station.and it quickly became clear that there were no trains there. Lloyd (Forry Smith) takes the unsuspecting Fred to a large cliff overlooking a ravine, and before he knows what’s happening, Lloyd shoots him and knocks him off the ridge. This is clearly not the first time and will not be the last.
Beth and Dan Jenkins had an unusual meeting in a bar

Beth has her own separate storyline. Yellowstone Season 1, Episode 4: While hanging out at a bar, Beth finally meets the man she’s been stalking, Dan Jenkins. Dan is surprised to see her there and, being a married man, he is nervous about his wife and family seeing them together, so Beth takes him to a bar located off the beaten path. Beth deliberately puts herself in a position where men in another bar attack her, and Dan bravely stands up for her, receiving first a punch to the throat and then two more to the face. Having had enough, Dan leaves in a rage.
Beth stays nearby, continuing to drink, smoke and dance until Rip arrives. He easily chases away the men pursuing Beth and sits down next to her. Rip is the first person who made her smile all night. after telling her she looks good, they dance together and end up kissing.

Monica realizes how toxic the Duttons are
In other news in Yellowstone Season 1, Episode 4 Casey and Monica (Kelsey Asbille) are still reeling from the suicide of Monica’s sister-in-law. Samantha Long (Morning Star Angelina) committed suicide after the Duttons killed her husband in a shootout. Monica now believes she committed suicide because she believed her estranged parents would take care of her children when Samantha left as she would not be able to do so financially.
He eventually goes to Monica with his suspicions, warning her about the people she has become involved with.
This is another reason why Monica lost respect and trust in Casey. When Tate is injured after a day with John, her dislike for the Duttons grows even greater. At the end of the episode, Casey is arrested by the police. He tells Monica he loves her before leaving. Thomas Rainwater gets even closer to discovering who Casey killed and where the bodies are buried, and he causes construction work to stop after the discovery of several bones. He eventually goes to Monica with his suspicions, warning her about the people she has become involved with.
What’s next for Yellowstone?
Season 1, Episode 4 provides insight into the characters’ thoughts
Yellowstone season 1, episode 4, “Long Black Train”, does not contain much of a plotbut it reveals some important things about the characters. Beth and Rip are growing closer, John is very sick and thinking about his legacy, Casey’s sins are coming back to haunt him, Monica can no longer turn a blind eye to the Duttons, Jimmy has his work cut out for him, Danny has realized how formidable an opponent the Duttons will be, and Rainwater proves to the Duttons, that he could be as smart and formidable as they are.
Major conflicts in Yellowstone The first season takes place in this episode, and each character has to consider how they fit into either the Duttons or Yellowstone Ranch. Yellowstone Season 1, Episode 4 may be slow, but it starts the timer for explosive events to come.
